Geno Lewis to Oklahoma: Latest Transfer Details, Comments and Reaction
Wide receiver Geno Lewis announced Monday he is transferring from Penn State to Oklahoma for the 2016 season.
Lewis caught 17 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns this past year.
The redshirt junior provided a statement on Twitter:
In 2014, Lewis was the Penn State Nittany Lions' No. 2 receiver, finishing with 55 receptions, 751 yards and two touchdowns. He appeared in every game in 2015, but like quarterback Christian Hackenberg, his impact was seemingly limited by James Franklin's coaching. Fellow wideouts DaeSean Hamilton and Chris Godwin—both of whom had strong years—didn't make it easy for Lewis, either.
"We're looking for guys to be consistent," Franklin said in September, per Greg Pickel of PennLive.com. "Consistency is the fact with a lot of our guys at a lot of positions. They show flashes of doing special things, but they want to do it more consistently and we want them to do it more consistently. I think Geno's in that conversation like a lot of guys are."
Cory Giger of ESPN Radio 1450 in State College, Pennsylvania, wondered in December if Lewis had a future with the school beyond 2015:
Transferring to Oklahoma makes sense for all parties involved.
With Lewis out of the picture, the Penn State coaching staff can focus more on the development of Hamilton and Godwin.
Franklin will be at Penn State next season, and Hackenberg is heading to the NFL. Given the way Franklin failed to make the most of Hackenberg's time at the school, the passing game is unlikely to take a major step forward as the Nittany Lions transition to an inexperienced replacement for Hackenberg.
Lewis will instead join an offense flush with talented skill players. Baker Mayfield is one of the best quarterbacks in the country, and with wide receiver Sterling Shepard graduating, he'll need a new No. 1 target in the passing game.
Oklahoma fans shouldn't expect Lewis to replicate Shepard's impressive numbers—86 receptions, 1,288 yards and 11 touchdowns—but he gives the Sooners a proven pass-catcher who should provide immediate results.
Following its Orange Bowl loss to Clemson, Oklahoma will want to hit the ground running in 2016, and Lewis should help make that happen.
