Arsenal gained a point on Leicester City after beating Newcastle 1-0, while the Foxes settled for a scoreless draw against Bournemouth.
It wasn't Arsenal's prettiest performance, however, as they were uninspiring throughout and needed a Laurent Koscielny goal on a corner to secure the three points.
"It was about solidarity, tired legs and taking a chance from a set piece," said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger after the match, per Saj Chowdhury of BBC Sport. "We were not at our best today, but over Christmas in four games we took nine points so we can look back and say we did 75 percent of our job as we lost at Southampton."
Indeed, there have been more positives than negatives for Arsenal of late, and that should only continue. The club will likely add some fresh faces in January to bolster depth, Alexis Sanchez should return in the next two weeks and Mesut Ozil has been arguably the Premier League's best player this season.
The team will have a tough test when they return to Premier League action in two weeks, however, as a matchup against Liverpool awaits. Leicester City's draw against Bournemouth was a disappointing start to a brutal stretch of fixtures, as the team is set to face Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City between now and mid-February in league play.
It's hard to not expect the Foxes to come back down to earth after an amazing start to the season, as football writer Miguel Delaney noted after Saturday's draw:
Meanwhile, Manchester City keeps hanging around the top of the table, remaining three points of Arsenal after Saturday's 2-1 win over Watford. The Citizens are certainly dangerous, given the immense talent they have at every position on the pitch, though that talent has yet to come together this season. Some of that has been due to injuries, but City remain a talented team that hasn't quite discovered its identity this season.
If they figure it out soon, however, the Gunners will have a hard time staving them off.
Tottenham's bid to stay with the title favorites took a slight blow on Sunday, as they drew with Everton. That moved Spurs six points off the top of the table, while Manchester United's 2-1 win over Swansea brought them three points behind Tottenham in the running for the fourth and final Champions League place.
West Ham shot to sixth place with their 2-0 win over Liverpool, continuing the Reds' disappointing season, while Crystal Palace remained in seventh place after being hammered by Chelsea, 3-0. The Blues have taken eight points in their last four games since manager Jose Mourinho was fired. They had eight points in their previous 10 games under Mourinho.
The Blues are well out of the running for the league title and likely won't be able to get back into the running for a Champions League spot outside of winning the competition this year. But they'll certainly be a dangerous fixture for the top contenders and may yet play a major role in the title race, even if it's in a spoiler role.
