Under Armour All-America Game 2016: Complete Box Score and Analysis

Brian LeighJan 2, 2016

The 2016 Under Armour All-America Game took place Saturday, and with it began the final stretch of the recruiting cycle.

Even without defensive end Nick Bosa, the No. 6 overall prospect who sat out with an injury, defensive line play became the story of the game, which Team Highlight won 27-0 over Team Armour.

Here's a closer look at the stat sheet, courtesy of Blog And Tackle.

Q4-5:34A.J. Brown 8-yd pass from Malik Henry (Ricky Aguayo kick)27-0

Both teams started slow, but a muffed punt by Florida commit Chauncey Gardner led to the game's first score, a 12-yard catch by Oregon commit Eddie McDoom.

That was all Team Highlight needed, as Team Armour failed to score a single point. Highlight padded its lead with 10 points in the second quarter and 10 more in the second half, but the star of the game was its defense, which held Team Armour to 120 total yards.

Woody BarrettAuburn1-3-1-0-0

All three Highlight quarterbacks played well, especially Florida State commit Malik Henry, who finished 9-of-12 passing for 75 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Maryland commit Dwayne Haskins, whose recruitment will be a hot topic before signing day, started and posted average numbers, while Miami commit Jack Allison, a talented but sometimes erratic gunslinger, showcased his big arm and threw a touchdown to future teammate Dionte Mullins.

Team Armour's quarterbacks struggled, in large part because they didn't have time to throw. Still, it was a quiet performance across the board, especially for Tennessee commit Jarrett Guarantano, whom Bleacher Report's Tyler Donohue named a top performer in practice.

No back logged more carries than Arkansas commit Devwah Whaley, who also led the game with 49 rushing yards. Teammate and future rival B.J. Emmons, an Alabama pledge, struggled to find room and averaged less than one yard per carry.

The longest run of the game came from an unexpected source: future Wake Forest punter Dom Maggio, who improvised a 16-yard scamper in the first half.

Penn State commit Miles Sanders led Team Armour with 35 rushing yards, while future rival Kareem Walker, a onetime Ohio State pledge who now stands committed to Michigan, also struggled to find room.

Wide receiver A.J. Brown, one of the top uncommitted players in the class, boosted his stock with four catches for 79 yards and a touchdown. His 53-yard catch from Allison was the longest play of the game, and then he tacked on a score from Henry.

Mississippi State and Alabama are the favorites to land him, but perhaps he should consider a move to the Sunshine State.

Maryland commit Tino Ellis, who lined up opposite his (hopeful) college quarterback Haskins, caught a 51-yard pass from USC commit Matt Fink that went down as Team Armour's longest play. Outside of that, the team gained just 69 yards the rest of the game.

The best player on the field was the No. 1 overall player in the class: defensive tackle Rashan Gary.

Gary tied the Under Armour All-America game record with three sacks, logging all three before the second drive of the third quarter. He also added a half-tackle for loss on the following drive, when he and Michigan commit Devin Bush—a potential future teammate?—stopped Woody Barrett on a designed quarterback run.

Gary also played the role of mentor, telling star class of 2017 recruit Dylan Moses to stay focused and keep outside voices from affecting him, as captured by Tom VanHaaren of ESPN.com:

Two other defensive tackles made their presence known on Saturday.

Benito Jones logged four tackles for loss and looked ready to make an impact for Ole Miss, which next year must replace Robert Nkemdiche.

For Team Armour, 5-star Houston commit Ed Oliver, who shockingly chose his hometown school over many blue-chip offers, spent most of the day in the backfield. His burst off the line and speed between the guards will play well in the American Athletic Conference.
