Mesut Ozil is the runaway assist leader (16) in the Premier League, and the German playmaker registered his third league goal of the year, scoring in the 63rd minute to seal the Gunners' 2-0 win. He had his hands in just about everything Arsenal created in the attacking third, per OptaJoe:
Even Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe was left awestruck by Ozil's performance.
"From a football point of view you have to respect what Ozil delivered today," Howe said, per Bleacher Report's James McNicholas. "He's an exceptional player."
Some Gooners will likely downplay any talk of Arsenal winning the Premier League after the club's many close calls and second-half swoons in recent seasons. But with no team truly emerging from the pack, the Gunners are firmly in the driver's seat to lift their first league title since 2003-04.
Although it had little impact on the current standings, Manchester United's clash with Chelsea drew the most attention among Monday's slate of fixtures.
The Guardian's Jamie Jackson reported Sunday the fate of embattled United manager Louis van Gaal potentially hinged on the Red Devils' result against the Blues, suggesting a loss could mean the end of the Dutchman's tenure at Old Trafford.
United performed well in a 0-0 draw and nearly walked away with a 1-0 win were it not for a wonder save by Thibaut Courtois on the goal line.
Bleacher Report UK could only applaud the Belgian for his quick reactions:
After the match, Van Gaal erased any chance he'd voluntarily walk away from his post, per Aaron Flanagan of the Daily Mirror:
"Even after this result the fans were applauding so I cannot say I'm very much concerned.
In this football world you never know, but I'm fully confident in the board and my players.
Will I resign? On the contrary. When the players can give such a performance with a lot of pressure, there is not any reason to resign for me.
Maybe the media wants me to but I shall not resign. It's not a question of staying, it's a question of fulfilling my contract.
"
The Mail on Sunday's Oliver Holt is among those lobbying for Van Gaal to keep his job:
Basing a manager's future on one result is foolish to a certain extent. One game doesn't automatically eliminate the underlying issues plaguing a club, and even the most convincing of victories isn't a surefire indicator progress is being made.
Making a decision about Van Gaal solely on the back of Monday's draw would be ill-advised by United—either the board believes in the manager or it doesn't.
Unless things at Old Trafford begin taking a turn toward the disastrous, like Chelsea's results before Jose Mourinho's departure, Van Gaal should remain manager until the end of the season, at which point the club could truly look at all of its options.
Remi Garde is proof a new manager doesn't always turn a club's fortunes around. Aston Villa remain winless since Garde took over after a 2-0 loss to Norwich City, with four draws and four defeats to the Frenchman's name.
Nobody is blaming Garde for Villa's position in the table considering anything other than relegation will be a minor miracle for the club this season. Villa have performed at an almost historically bad level, per OptaJoe:
"I will be the last man not to believe we are capable of winning games," said Garde to Sky Sports after the match (via Goal's Peter Hanson). "I believe my players are good enough to win games but this season is a difficult one for Villa. Sometimes in football you have to cope with this situation."
There's still time for Villa to climb out of the relegation zone, but each matchday without a victory puts them one step closer to the Championship in 2016-17.
