Manchester United vs. Norwich City: Winners and Losers from Premier League

Joe TanseyDec 19, 2015

Norwich City produced a shocking result at Old Trafford on Saturday as they downed Manchester United 2-1.

Cameron Jerome and Alexander Tettey struck for a goal each on the counter in each half to power the Canaries to their fourth victory of the season.

Anthony Martial pulled back a goal for United in the 66th minute, but his tally would end up being the only shot on goal United recorded over 90 minutes.

The defeat added more pressure to United under manager Louis van Gaal, while Norwich jumped out of the bottom three with the victory.

Here's a look at our winners and losers from Norwich's big win in the red half of Manchester.

Winner: Cameron Jerome

1 of 5

Cameron Jerome turned a rare counter into the first goal of the match in the 38th minute as Norwich took a shocking lead at Old Trafford.

Jerome linked up with a Nathan Redmond pass, cut around a few defenders and fired the match's first shot on target into the back of the net.

The goal stunned United and forced them to go into the half-time break down a goal and in need of some adjustments, but those alterations did not come.

In the 54th minute, Jerome fed Alexander Tettey with an assist, which came on the second Canaries attempt on target.

Jerome's 38th-minute strike was the second scored by a visiting player at Old Trafford in league play this season, per Opta, and it was his first since October 31 against Manchester City.

Loser: Phil Jones

2 of 5

We're still trying to figure out what exactly Phil Jones was trying to do in the buildup to the first Norwich goal.

Jones, who started next to Chris Smalling at center back, was caught forward from his defensive position as he attempted to break up the Norwich counter.

However, his strategy backfired as Redmond cut a pass through the open space created by Jones to find Jerome on the right side of the box.

With no one left to cover and Jones still too far forward, Jerome finished off the strike with plenty of space in the middle of the box.

Jones didn't do himself any favors on the second Norwich goal either, as Ashley Young and Smalling were forced to chase down Tettey in the gap Jones left open.

Winner: Alexander Tettey

3 of 5

Alexander Tettey scored Norwich's second strike on a counter similar to the one Jerome benefited from in the 38th minute.

Tettey broke through the United back four with a surging run from midfield and connected with Jerome's pass to beat David De Gea with a shot into the left side of the net.

The goal from the 29-year-old Norway international sent the fans at Old Trafford into a round of boos directed at the poor performance from their team's attack.

Tettey's early tally in the second half was his first of the season for the Canaries, who jumped out of the relegation zone with their historic victory.

Loser: Wayne Rooney

4 of 5

Wayne Rooney's 500th appearance in a United shirt was one to forget.

The forward failed to be a consistent threat in front of the Norwich goal in a match where United had a massive hold on the possession battle.

Rooney's best attempt of the match, if you want to call it that, was an overhead shot from close range in the 60th minute that flew over the net.

With his side struggling to find chances in the final third, you would expect Rooney to step up and finish off a key opportunity. However, that was not the case as Rooney disappeared for key stretches of the game.

Rooney's silence in front of goal was caused by a terrific defensive performance from Sebastian Bassong and Ryan Bennett. The Norwich center backs held their ground all night and rarely made a mistake against Rooney and the other United attackers.

Winner: Anthony Martial

5 of 5

The lone consolation prize the United attack took away from Saturday's disappointing performance was Anthony Martial's goal.

The young Frenchman netted his first league goal since September 20 in the 66th minute as he struck the roof of the net from close range on the left side of the box.

Martial's strike was also United's only shot on goal in the contest, which is unacceptable for the Red Devils given their dominance in the possession battle.

With Rooney struggling to get involved in the attack, it would be wise of Louis van Gaal to start Martial up top as the lone striker in an attempt to let the 20-year-old find some form.
