Division II Football Championship 2015: Date, Start Time, TV Schedule and More
Saturday is proving to be a jam-packed day of college football.
With the FBS bowl season getting underway, along with an FCS semifinal game being played between Sam Houston State and Jacksonville State, the Division II college football championship game on Saturday pits two teams with drastically different postseason histories.
Here's everything you need to know about the championship game on Saturday:
| Northwest Missouri State vs. Shepherd | 4 p.m. | Sporting Park, Kansas City, Missouri | ESPN2 |
This is nothing new for 14-0 Northwest Missouri State, as the Bearcats will be appearing in their ninth Division II national championship game since 1998. It's their first appearance in the final since 2013, when they won their fourth national championship, defeating Lenoir-Rhyne 43-28.
That's not the case for 13-0 Shepherd, who are making their first trip to the championship game since joining Division II in 1994. It's the first time in program history that the team has won 13 games in a single season.
Shepherd will have its work cut out for it, facing a Northwest Missouri State team that holds the top defense in the nation, allowing just 233.1 total yards per game. The Bearcats have only allowed more than 17 points in a game four times this season.
Shepherd's defense is no slouch, either, ranking 12th in the nation. Which makes this an interesting matchup, considering these teams manage to put up a lot of points despite having mediocre offenses.
Northwestern Missouri State averages 41.9 points per game despite being ranked 43rd in offense. Much of that offense is carried by quarterback Brady Bolles, ranked fourth in Division II with 3,748 passing yards this season.
Shepherd puts up 39.8 points per game but has an offensive unit ranked 71st. Quarterback Jeff Ziemba also led the Rams with over 3,200 yards passing.
It's going to come down to which defense will be able to come up with stops against the passing game. But I wouldn't expect a ton of points to be scored on Saturday between the two teams. However, Northwest Missouri State's big-game experience is going to help out on the big stage against a debuting Shepherd team.
