Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez both netted for Leicester City on Monday as the Foxes returned to the top of the Premier League table with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea.

The King Power Stadium was treated to a fantastic clash as Vardy and Mahrez put the hosts ahead 2-0 only for Loic Remy to set up a breathless finish as he pulled one back with 13 minutes remaining.

Leicester held firm to claim yet another huge victory in their incredible campaign as Chelsea failed to move out of 16th place in the division.

Week 16 Recap

Leicester looked sharp early against Chelsea, and Mahrez fired off the first chance inside two minutes after making a mazy run through the middle, unchallenged by the Blues defence.

Manager Jose Mourinho substituted Eden Hazard just before the half-hour mark after the star suffered a hip injury under a challenge from Vardy, per the Times' Henry Winter:

To further pile the pain on the visitors, the Englishman netted the opener five minutes later as he volleyed home Mahrez's beautifully weighted cross from the right, having ghosted in between John Terry and Kurt Zouma.

Three minutes after the break, the Algerian made it 2-0 as he curled a delightful left-footed finish past Thibaut Courtois from the right of the box.

Mahrez's brilliant movement had turned Cesar Azpilicueta inside out to create space for the shot.

In an attempt to get his side back into the game, Mourinho threw on Cesc Fabregas and Remy in place of Terry and Oscar, and the Frenchman pulled one back in the 77th minute.

Pedro picked out Remy with a brilliant cross from the left, and the striker headed it home to set up an exciting finish.

Despite Chelsea's best efforts, they could carve out only half-chances in the closing minutes, and Leicester sealed a deserved victory when the final whistle blew.

Elsewhere in Week 16, Manchester United lost ground on the league leaders as Bournemouth downed them 2-1 at the Vitality Stadium—although Bleacher Report's Dean Jones is still convinced United will finish the season in the top four:

Junior Stanislas scored directly from a corner after just two minutes, only for Marouane Fellaini to scramble home an equaliser 20 minutes later.

But the visitors faltered after half-time, and Joshua King found the winner before the hour mark to condemn United to their third consecutive league game without a victory.

On Sunday, Newcastle United handed Tottenham Hotspur their first defeat since the opening day of the season. Aleksandar Mitrovic cancelled out Eric Dier's opener before Ayoze Perez found a stoppage-time winner.

Spurs striker Harry Kane tweeted his disappointment following his third consecutive goalless league match:

Liverpool saved a point on Sunday as Divock Origi netted deep into injury time against West Bromwich Albion to snatch a 2-2 draw for the Reds.

Jordan Henderson opened the scoring for manager Jurgen Klopp's side before Craig Dawson and Jonas Olsson looked to have handed the visitors all three points at Anfield.

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet again showed his propensity to make costly mistakes as his air punch gifted Dawson his goal, per WhoScored.com:

Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey were both on the scoresheet as Arsenal beat Aston Villa 2-0 at Villa Park to move temporarily into the top spot on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Kelechi Iheanacho was the stoppage-time hero for Manchester City as he found the winner against Swansea City in the 92nd minute after Bafetimbi Gomis had found a late equaliser for the visitors following Wilfried Bony's opener.

Crystal Palace moved to within three points of the top four after their 1-0 home victory over Southampton, with Yohan Cabaye netting the only goal of the game in the 38th minute.

And Norwich City held Everton to a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road as Wes Hoolahan's second-half strike followed Romelu Lukaku's seventh league goal in six matches, per WhoScored.com.

Odion Ighalo continued his goalscoring form as he netted the winner for Watford in a 1-0 victory over Sunderland, while West Ham United and Stoke City shared the spoils at Upton Park after a 0-0 draw.
