2016 NFL Mock Draft: Breaking Down Post-Week 14 Predictions

Danny WebsterDec 14, 2015

Maybe the Cleveland Browns don't want the No. 1 pick after all.

Johnny Manziel got the win on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. Couple that with a Tennessee Titans loss, and the Browns' hopes for the top pick in the 2016 NFL draft may have been dashed.

Here's the latest mock draft after Week 14's action, with a little bit of change at the top.

No. 4—Jacksonville Jaguars: Jalen Ramsey, DB, Florida State

There have been many good defensive backs to come out of Florida State. Ronald Darby, for example, has been playing like the Defensive Rookie of the Year this season for the Buffalo Bills.

Jalen Ramsey is every bit as talented as Darby and is the kind of defensive playmaker the Jacksonville Jaguars have coveted in the secondary for quite some time.

The good news for the Jaguars is that their offense is set. A couple of offensive linemen here and there, and the foundation is set for years to come with Blake Bortles and Co. But the Jaguars, who have a defensive-minded coach in Gus Bradley, need someone who can be that Richard Sherman-type corner on the outside.

That is Ramsey. He's got great size for a corner coming out of college at 6'1" and 202 pounds, and he uses his long wingspan and vision to combat any type of pass thrown his way.

Dane Brugler of CBS Sports had this to say on Ramsey back in August: "Ramsey, who also plays a valuable role on special teams coverages, is a defensive savant with the framework that makes him a viable option at cornerback, safety or linebacker, and if his 2015 tape matches or exceeds last year, he will be one of the top players drafted next spring."

The Jaguars continue to build from the ground up and are somehow only one game back for the lead in the AFC South. If the Jaguars keep winning and find themselves distancing themselves from the top five, a trade could be in the works to move up. Ramsey is too good of a player for the Jaguars to miss.

No. 10—St. Louis Rams: Connor Cook, QB, Michigan State

It's safe to say the Nick Foles experiment hasn't worked for the St. Louis Rams. Neither did the Sam Bradford experiment, which is why the Rams traded for Foles in the first place.

In the end, the Rams need a quarterback. That's really the only thing holding them back from being a team contending for the playoffs each year. That, and maybe another receiver.

With Paxton Lynch and Jared Goff more than likely off the board at this point, Michigan State signal-caller Connor Cook is right there for the taking.

NFL draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah compares him to a former No. 1 overall pick, which could be a really good thing if he goes to the Rams, per Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman back in July:

"

The most established guy is Cook, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound senior who led the Big Ten in passing in 2014 with 3,214 yards and has a career 47-15 TD-INT ratio. "He reminds me a lot of (former No. 1 overall pick) Carson Palmer," said Jeremiah, now a draft analyst for NFL Network. "Maybe not the same type of top-end arm strength but the same type of size and presence."

"

If Cook is the next Palmer, then that's better than any other option the Rams have had since the days of Kurt Warner and Marc Bulger. Cook has great arm strength and has also shown some mobility when pursued outside the pocket.

His NFL future is uncertain, but he'd have a quality coach in Jeff Fisher to play for.

No. 12—New York Giants: Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Ohio State

Coming into Week 14, the leading rusher for the New York Giants is Rashad Jennings with 431 yards.

That should be the first, second and third reason why the Giants take Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott in the first round.

The Giants desperately need a running game, and there may be no better running back than Elliott. After his rough game against Michigan State in late November, Elliott declared for the draft. One scout told Feldman that he feels Elliott is more of a late-first-round pick.

"He’s not as physical finishing runs as Carlos Hyde, but he’s got better top-end speed," the scout told Feldman. "He’s not Todd Gurley, but he’s a complete back. I think he’s the real deal and he’ll probably be a late-first-round pick.”

I beg to differ. No matter where the Giants sit in the draft, whether it be 12, 22 or even 32, Elliott will be at the top of their board. He will go wherever the Giants go, and it won't matter if scouts feel he was drafted too high.

When a team has as bad a running game as the Giants do, all bets are off.
