Thursday Recap

Three points ahead of Anderlecht after five games, Spurs' job was all-but done already but that didn't stop the Lilywhites from producing an exceptional performance as they ruthlessly capitalised on some poor play at the back from Monaco.

Erik Lamela's White Hart Lane renaissance continued in full, as the Argentinian bagged a first-half hat-trick, per BT Sport Football:

The attacking midfielder drew plenty of plaudits on Twitter, including from football writer Liam Canning:

Stephan El Shaarawy pulled one back with a lovely curling shot from outside the area, but the hosts remained strong and restored their three-goal lead through Tom Carroll's excellent finish from a tight angle—his first for the club.

BVB went into their game needing to better Krasnodar's result against Qabala, but the Russian side's comfortable win essentially rendered their match meaningless, per football writer Stefan Buczko:

PAOK scored against the run of play in the first half when Robert Mak rounded the 'keeper after latching onto an exquisite through ball.

Marco Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit the post as Dortmund threw everything at their opponents. Squawka Football shared a telling heat-map in the second half:

However, Thomas Tuchel's side could not find an elusive equaliser.

Liverpool needed just a point to top Group B and duly got just that when they travelled to Sion.

The match was a largely tedious affair, with both teams seemingly content to pick up the draw they needed.

Elsewhere, Schalke made sure of their position as Group K leaders with thrashing of Asteras Tripolis, courtesy of goals from Franco Di Santo, Max Meyer and a brace from Eric Choupo-Moting.

Lazio finished Group G unbeaten as they drew 1-1 away at St Etienne, the latter's Valentin Eysseric cancelling out Alessandro Matri's opener.

Compatriots Fiorentina also enjoyed a successful night, as they saw off Belenenses 1-0 thanks to Khouma Babacar's goal and progressed to the next round.

With Celtic earning a surprise 1-1 draw away at Fenerbahce after Kris Commons replied to Lazar Markovic's opener, Ajax had the chance to leapfrog their Turkish rivals into second place in Group A.

The Eredivisie side took the lead early on through Donny van de Beek's effort, but they were pegged back shortly after by Harmeet Singh. Despite having 17 shots on Molde's goal, Ajax could not find a decisive strike and will have to wait until next season to compete in Europe once again.

Despite already being comfortably through to the next round and top of Group D, Napoli finished their group campaign with a bang as they made it six wins from six.

Nathaniel Chalobah and Lorenzo Insigne opened the scoring in the first half, while Jose Callejon added a third shortly before the hour-mark.

Stojan Vranjes pulled one back for Legia Warsaw soon after before Dries Mertens made it four, and as the tournament's official Twitter feed reveals, the Dutchman's strike equalled a record:

Mertens bagged another to ensure Napoli broke that record, before Aleksandar Prijovic grabbed another consolation late on.

The Partenopei have firmly established themselves as one of the teams to beat in the competition so far, and on based Thursday's performance, that isn't likely to change even when the Champions League drop-outs are included in the new year.
