Derrick Henry Wins 2015 Walter Camp Player of the Year: Comments and Reaction

Mike ChiariDec 10, 2015

Alabama junior running back Derrick Henry was honored for his fantastic 2015 season Thursday as the college football coaches named him the 2015 Walter Camp Player of the Year.

Dan Hope of Orange and White reported the news, as Henry beat out some stiff competition to win the prestigious accolade.

Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and Iowa defensive back Desmond King were the other finalists.

In a season when Alabama had question marks at the quarterback position, Henry put the offense on his back by rushing for 1,986 yards and 23 touchdowns. That included 200-plus-yard efforts in three of his final five games.

Henry was especially strong in a rivalry clash with Auburn as he set a number of Alabama records in that contest, according to SEC Network:

In addition, Henry broke Herschel Walker's record for the most rushing yards ever in a single season by an SEC player.

Henry became the first running back to win the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award since Darren McFadden in 2007, and surprisingly enough, the first Crimson Tide player to ever capture it.

Henry is also among three finalists for the Heisman Trophy, which will be awarded Saturday night.

While Henry must refocus and get ready for a Cotton Bowl clash with No. 3 Michigan State on Dec. 31 to determine one of the national championship game finalists, winning the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award cements the 2015 season as a great one for Henry regardless of how far Alabama goes.
