Twitter Reacts as Newcastle United Stun Liverpool at St. James' Park
A weekend of huge upsets in the Premier League had another to add to the list on Sunday, after Newcastle United turned the tables to beat Liverpool at St. James' Park.
Steve McLaren's struggling side went into the game languishing in 19th place, but the Magpies produced a stirring performance to stun the high-flying Reds.
Few expected such a result prior to kick-off, with Jurgen Klopp's side riding a high after thrashing Southampton in midweek:

"Steve McClaren is standing a good six inches outside his technical area. A sign the pressure is getting to him, surely.
— Nick Miller (@NickMiller79) December 6, 2015"
The first half, however, didn't provide much in the way of action:
"Newcastle shots on target 0 Liverpool shots on target 0 pic.twitter.com/uTwedzFFVF
— Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) December 6, 2015"
"0 - This is the 4th Premier League game this season to not see a shot on target in the first half & the 3rd to involve Liverpool. Blank.
— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) December 6, 2015"
Liverpool striker Christian Benteke was particularly poor:
"#LFC still look extremely uncomfortable with Benteke as the starting No. 9. Lacking movement, sharpness, everything.
— Sam Tighe (@stighefootball) December 6, 2015"
"Can see Klopp's biggest problem unfolding here. Needs to find a way to get that fast, fluid style working with Benteke on the pitch.
— Mark Jones (@Mark_Jones86) December 6, 2015"
The home side then went ahead shortly after the hour mark, with Georginio Wijnaldum's shot deflecting off Martin Skrtel and into the back of the net:
"Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool (#Skrtel OG 70, deflecting Wijnaldum’s shot) pic.twitter.com/hBan5zWc3Z

"Georginio Wijnaldum's shot deflected past Simon Mignolet by Martin Skrtel for an own goal. Liverpool had been warned.
— Tom Williams (@tomwfootball) December 6, 2015"
"Joy unconfined amongst #nufc fans, players and management as Skrtel turns in Wijnaldum shot. OG. 1-0.
— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) December 6, 2015"
There wasn't much to be admired about Liverpool's defending, as Skrtel equalled an unwanted record:
"Skrtel, Lovren & Lucas reminding us that they are in fact Skrtel, Lovren & Lucas.
— Ed (@edAfootball) December 6, 2015"
"This defence, and particularly Martin Skrtel, has been awful.

While fans were quick to mock recent talk of a potential title challenge from Anfield:

"...but I thought Liverpool were going to win the Premier League? ☕️🐸
— Ben McAleer (@BenMcAleer1) December 6, 2015"
Midweek hero Daniel Sturridge had a chance to equalise soon after, but he appeared to have left his shooting boots in Southampton:
"Sturridge has a great opportunity to make it 1-1. Awful shot.
— LFC Fans Corner (@LFCFansCorner) December 6, 2015"
"Oh dear Sturridge 🙈

Alberto Moreno then had a delightful finish incorrectly ruled out for offside:
"When you see #Moreno’s volley again. pic.twitter.com/5KChLzCeEa
— Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) December 6, 2015"
"Not even close to offside
— Sam Tighe (@stighefootball) December 6, 2015"
"Poor Moreno, that'll be the best goal he never scored.
— Dave Will (@davewi11) December 6, 2015"
"Linesman screwed us. That was a brilliant goal from Moreno. Aaaaaargh

"Offside or not, that finish from Alberto Moreno.. Sublime. #LFC #NEWLIV
— Balls.ie (@ballsdotie) December 6, 2015"
Before Georginio Wijnaldum made sure of the points, providing the finish to an incisive Moussa Sissoko pass:

"Brilliant move and finish. Sissoko picked right moment to deliver pass, Wijnaldum dinked ball over Mignolet. 2-0 #nufc
— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) December 6, 2015"
Newcastle held on to claim a vital three points:
"FT: Newcastle 2-0 Liverpool pic.twitter.com/Y7fXim3Yqa
— Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) December 6, 2015"
"Thought Newcastle were brilliant there. Liverpool just as mad as all the other 'contenders.' Setup wasn't right at all.
— Mark Jones (@Mark_Jones86) December 6, 2015"
"2-0 for #NUFC, who deserve their win. Spirited, organised and competitive for 90 mins. #LFC as poor today as they were impressive in midweek
— Oliver Kay (@OliverKayTimes) December 6, 2015"
"Do the post match interview in a German accent Steve. Do it #nufc
