Gareth Bale Comments on Cristiano Ronaldo, Ballon d'Or and Real Madrid Form

Christopher SimpsonDec 6, 2015

Speaking after their 4-1 win over Getafe on Saturday, Real Madrid star Gareth Bale reiterated there is no problem between himself and team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and also reflected on his own form, conceding that for reasons unknown to him he is not the player he was at Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Marca, he spoke of Ronaldo and also touched on the superstar's chances of winning a third successive Ballon d'Or.

"We get on very well, there are a lot of rumours, but there's no truth to them," he said. "We've scored four goals and are very happy with that. He's one of the best players in the world. Is he the best? That's down to each individual to decide, he's certainly a top, top player."

Ronaldo is one of the three finalists for 2015's award, along with Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Neymar, with 46 goals and 15 assists to his name for the calendar year.

It has often been rumoured that Ronaldo and Bale don't see eye to eye, perhaps due to Ronaldo fearing the Welshman could unseat him as Los Blancos' main man.

However, the pair recently embraced while celebrating Real's final goal in the 4-3 Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk, and Ronaldo provided a marvellous headed assist to Bale in Saturday's victory.

As for Bale's own form, after a successful debut year in the Spanish capital, the 26-year-old has since struggled to make the same impact. He said: "I don't know why I'm not the player I was at Tottenham. This league is different to the Premier League, it's a different style of football, and that's perhaps behind it."

A change of position could be the cause—while at Spurs, Bale very much made the left wing his home; at Real, that position is occupied by Ronaldo, causing the Welshman to frequently be deployed on the right as a central striker or, as of this season, a No. 10.

Bale claims he is happy anywhere, though: "In any position, on the right, the left or in the middle."

Nevertheless, he appears to be finding his form once again, having scored four goals and assisted six in just nine La Liga outings this season. Football writer Ben Hayward believes he is in encouraging form:

Though Real are failing to sparkle under Rafa Benitez, to the frustration of their fans, the winger is no longer enduring the jeers he did at times in the last campaign.

The first half against Getafe demonstrated perfectly the sublime play he, Ronaldo and Karim Benzema can conjure when the trio are on top form. If they can continue to produce such mesmerising displays, Bale's career in Madrid will be firmly back on track.
