United to Fall at Final Hurdle

Manchester United's lack of predatory knowledge in front of goal has cost them dearly in Group B, and they now stand on the edge of elimination from the Champions League.

Coach Louis van Gaal takes his Red Devils side to group leaders Wolfsburg on Tuesday night, knowing his team realistically need the three points to advance to the knockouts.

PSV Eindhoven need to better United's result in their home tie against CSKA Moscow, who have lost three of their Champions League group games this term.

A win for the Dutch side would see them leapfrog United, if the Premier League side fail to be victorious, consigning the famous English side to the Europa League.

Van Gaal's men looked in control of their destiny for the majority of the campaign but tripped up at home to PSV, posting a draw at Old Trafford in a match they should have won. A victory would have guaranteed qualification for United, but they're now forced to do it the hard way against the tough Bundesliga outfit.

Wolfsburg lie fifth in Germany and have not been in the greatest shape this season, but it is United's inability to score that will shape the game.

LvG's men recorded their fifth goalless draw in nine games in all competitions against West Ham United on Saturday, according to WhoScored.com, as boos rang out around the Theatre of Dreams at full-time.

The group has been a war of attrition, with each team failing to display the necessary firepower to dismantle their opponents.

PSV looked rank outsiders at the advent of the competition, but their early win over United has kept them in the hunt until the final game of the group stage.

United could not consistently hit the target against West Ham, and this has held them back after rectifying their early defensive problems of last season, as highlighted by Squawka:

However, journalist Martin Asiedu-Dartey believed it was the best United have played for many weeks, suggesting they could be ready for a good performance against their German hosts:

Ultimately, with or without Wayne Rooney, United have looked a faded force when in the opposition's final-third. Wolfsburg are a tough opponent at the Volkswagen Arena, and the English club's inhibitions will hold them back.

United appear scared to leave space behind their midfield, allowing opponents to sit deep and cause a stalemate.

The Red Devils might have the lion's share of territory on Tuesday night, but with PSV looking good for the three points, it could be a huge night of disappointment for a famous team who used to take group qualification for granted not so long ago.

European Relief for Mourinho

Chelsea have had a season to forget in 2015-16, and Christmas is still weeks away. The Premier League champions have capitulated at home in the defence of their title, and they slipped to an embarrassing defeat against Bournemouth on Saturday.

However, coach Jose Mourinho has used the Champions League to keep his side's collective head above water, and Chelsea lead Group H going into the final match.

The Blues should gain path into the next round, but the defeat against Bournemouth was the worst kind of preparation for such a huge game.

Chelsea host Porto, and the stakes are high for both teams. A defeat for either of the top two will open the qualification door for Kiev, who only need to outscore a poor Maccabi Tel Aviv side to gain the points they need.

The Blues have kept their supporters nourished with their their European matches, only losing once during the group phase, but a home loss to Porto—coupled with a Dynamo victory—would be a crushing blow to Mourinho.

Chelsea are just two points above the Premier League relegation zone, and their collapse in fortune mirrors Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga last year.

That shocking event saw the end of Jurgen Klopp's reign at the Westfalenstadion, and if Mourinho fails against the team he led to the Champions League title in 2004, his tenure at Stamford Bridge could be over in a flash.
