Grading the 2014/15 Premier League Team of the Season on Form This Term

Mark JonesDec 5, 2015

They were the undisputed kings of 2014/15, but how are last season's best performers in the Premier League getting on this time around?

The PFA Team of the Year, detailed in this MailOnline article, included six players from champions Chelsea as well as representatives from Manchester United, Southampton, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, with the XI making up one of the most talented sides you'd see anywhere.

More than seven months on, though, have opinions changed?

Assuming all of these players were given an A grade for their efforts last season, how do they compare this time around?

David De Gea: B

1 of 11

It didn't look as though David De Gea would still be playing his football in England in 2014/15 as his potential transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid drew closer and closer, but after his brief absence from the team at the start of the season, he's returned and looks to be his usual, reliable self.

In truth, that B grade is really just down to the fact he missed those matches at the beginning of the campaign, and don't be surprised if he ends the season back in this team again.

Branislav Ivanovic: F

2 of 11

Perhaps the symbol of everything that has gone wrong for Chelsea this season, Branislav Ivanovic's sudden realisation he can no longer keep up with the speedy wingers of the Premier League has been a remarkable thing to witness.

Once so powerful and assured of his place in Jose Mourinho's side, these days the Serbian looks a little lost. With his contract running out at the club at the end of the season, it would be a surprise if he were to still be there in 2016/17.

Gary Cahill: D

3 of 11

As Chelsea grew in stature throughout last season, England's Gary Cahill got better and better.

The former Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers man was one of the best centre-backs in the European game last term, as he simplified his approach to merely defending his own goal at all costs.

This season, he's often looked a little sluggish and has been caught out of position too many times, another symbol of Chelsea's sudden and dramatic fall from grace.

John Terry: D

4 of 11

If last season was all about the renaissance of John Terry, who led Chelsea to their fourth Premier League title in a decade, this term has just seen the veteran defender begin to look his age.

Memorably taken off at half-time in the Blues' early-season defeat at Manchester City, Terry, who turns 35 on Dec. 7, was sent off in a match at West Bromwich Albion the following week. He has been dropped from the side as Jose Mourinho frequently prefers the extra pace and youthfulness of Kurt Zouma. This could be the beginning of the end.

Ryan Bertrand: C

5 of 11

Injury has meant Southampton's Ryan Bertrand has only figured in eight of his side's 14 Premier League games so far and has also affected his rating here.

The England man was a raiding force from left-back for the Saints last season, but Ronald Koeman's men haven't quite managed to recapture their consistency during this campaign, with Bertrand perhaps missing the runs of fellow full-back Nathaniel Clyne, who moved to Liverpool in the summer.

Nemanja Matic: F

6 of 11

Like fellow Serbian Ivanovic, Nemanja Matic has been nowhere near his best as Chelsea have stumbled from one catastrophe to another during their mess of a campaign.

Matic was the rock upon which much of their success was built on in 2014/15, but without him sitting in front of the defence and protecting his back four in the manner he used to, Chelsea have often been an open book at the back, conceding shedloads of goals and lacking the character to fight back.

Philippe Coutinho: B

7 of 11

He started the season with a stunning late winner at Stoke City in Liverpool's opening game, but Philippe Coutinho then embarked on a disappointing run of form that coincided with the final few weeks of Brendan Rodgers' reign.

Since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp in October, however, the Brazilian has been back to his very best, starring in the hugely impressive victories at Chelsea and Manchester City that have really got the Klopp era started, and his place as one of the best attacking talents in the division is now safe once again.

Alexis Sanchez: B

8 of 11

Arsenal's apparent reliance on Alexis Sanchez is going to be tested in the next few weeks as the Chilean recovers from an injury, but when he's been on his top form this season, he has been virtually unstoppable.

It did, however, take Sanchez nine appearances to register his first goal this season as he recovered from the Copa America in the summer, and he now hasn't scored in the Premier League for two months. These things are unlikely to deter him, though, and he'll be back firing on all cylinders when he's fully fit.

Eden Hazard: F

9 of 11

Still without a goal for Chelsea this season, the staggering downturn in Eden Hazard's performances has been one of the stories of the season.

The Belgian was clearly the best player in the Premier League in 2014/15, but his magic touch has deserted him as the champions have faded away toward bottom-half-of-the-table obscurity.

There have been signs of improvement of late, but Hazard has a long way to go to match last season's highs.

Harry Kane: B

10 of 11

He started off the season slowly, but after finally registering his first strike of the campaign in the 4-1 win over Manchester City in late September, Harry Kane has never looked back.

He's back to leading the Tottenham line with distinction and looking to get one over on the many doubters who poured scorn on his achievements during his breakthrough campaign last season. It would be no surprise to see his name up there with the top scorers again come the end of the campaign.

Diego Costa: E

11 of 11

Looking more cumbersome and a little heavier than this time last season, when he was terrorising Premier League defences, Diego Costa has seen his status as a Chelsea fans favourite suffer a little during what has been a series of below-par performances.

He's managed just four goals in all competitions this term and was recently relegated to the bench for the recent league clash at Tottenham, something which would have been unthinkable last season.
