Atletico Madrid vs. Galatasaray Winners and Losers from Champions League
Atletico Madrid qualified from Champions League Group C by seeing off Galatasaray at the Vicente Calderon 2-0 on Wednesday night.
They now have 10 points, the same number as Benfica, who beat them 2-1 at home.
Now Atletico have to go to Portugal and try to equal or better that result if they want to finish top of their group and avoid the other group winners in the last 16.
Antoine Griezmann scored both goals as they eased past Galatasaray, and here are the game's winners and losers.
Winner: Antoine Griezmann
1 of 5
Of course, the clear winner from this match was French forward Antoine Griezmann, who left to cheers after he won Atletico the game.
It was history repeating itself, with Griezmann the man to do the damage against the Turks away from home in the first Champions League clash of the season, scoring both in another 2-0 win.
They must be getting sick of the sight of him in Istanbul, but Atletico fans will be glad to see him back on the scoreboard after a disappointing few weeks.
Griezmann had gone six games for Atletico and two for France only scoring one goal, against Sporting Gijon.
However he looked a lot more dangerous here than he has done recently, and when he was taken off in the 68th minute, Atletico fans showed their appreciation.
Both goals were well-taken, from Gabi assists. He headed home the first before firing in the second from close range. Griezy does it.
Loser: Fernando Torres
2 of 5
The wait goes on for Fernando Torres to score his 100th Atletico goal.
The last time he scored was against Eibar on September 19, and he has been poised to hit the milestone ever since.
Well, only in theory, because during the matches since then he hasn't looked particularly dangerous.
He has now gone 11 matches without scoring, although this clash was the first time he has played the full 90 minutes for Atletico this season.
With Jackson Martinez injured, he needed to step up and make the striker spot beside Antoine Griezmann his own but failed to do that against Betis in La Liga or in this game.
Worst of all for him, he's still looking for a new contract with his deal expiring at the end of the season. On this form he won't be getting it.
Winner: Diego Simeone
3 of 5
Atletico weren't particularly interesting against Galatasaray, and that's just how Diego Simeone likes it.
The Rojiblancos were tight at the back and created more chances up front than in some recent games, which left the Argentine coach very happy indeed.
Even without the injured Juanfran they were not particularly troubled at the back, and the coach says now they will be going to Portugal looking to finish as leaders and avoid some of Europe's toughest sides in the next round.
Atletico have qualified and Simeone was pleased for the players and fans. He said, per Sport: "I'm very happy for the club, for the players, for the people and now we go to try and top the group against Benfica in Portugal."
Although we have come to expect more from Atletico, given their league success in 2014 and reaching the Champions League final the same year, Simeone and Co are still enjoying the small victories too. And they should.
Loser: Wesley Sneijder
4 of 5
Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder is one of Galatasaray's best players and has been impressive this season.
However, he will feel partly responsible for his side's elimination from the Champions League.
Captain on the night, he played the full 90 minutes and got short shrift from both Atletico's defence and midfield.
On top of that, he wasted the one clear chance that he had, dragging his effort inches wide of Jan Oblak's far post.
To make matters worse, Atletico then went straight down the other end and broke the deadlock.
Winners: Tiago and Gabi
5 of 5
Somehow, this old midfield duo keep doing the business for Atletico. They have largely been excellent this season, and this win was no exception.
Tiago, 34, hustled and bustled in midfield, and when he was withdrawn was given a huge reception from Atletico supporters.
Gabi, 32, meanwhile, not only put a shift in defensively but turned creator too.
His cross from the right was inch-perfect and nodded home by Antoine Griezmann, but he went one better for the second goal.
Receiving the ball on the right of the box, Gabi daintily flicked the ball through Hakan Balta's legs, a perfect nutmeg that wouldn't have been out of place in Barcelona's 6-1 demolition of Roma the night before, and slid it across for Griezmann to bag.
