Champions League Groups 2015: Top Scorers, Qualified Teams After Tuesday's Games

James DudkoNov 24, 2015

Bayern Munich pair Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller maintained their dominance of the scoring charts in this season's UEFA Champions League during Tuesday's group matches. Barcelona's Luis Suarez also staked his claim as the deadliest goal-getter in this year's tournament.

It was a night when holders Barcelona qualified for the last 16 along with prolific Bayern. Meanwhile, Zenit Saint Petersburg confirmed top spot in Group H after a fifth straight win at this stage.

Chelsea took a step closer to the knockout phase after going top in Group G. By contrast, Arsenal will have to win away from home on Matchday 6 to make it.

Recap

The holders thumped AS Roma 6-1 at the Camp Nou, with Suarez and the returning Lionel Messi accounting for a quartet of goals. Barca have gone through and look a safe bet to become the first team ever to retain the trophy under this format.

Bayern Munich saw off another hapless Group F opponent by smashing four past Olympiakos in Greece. Brazilian winger Douglas Costa opened the Bundesliga giants' account before the Muller-Lewandowski double act took over.

Muller's strike continued his ominous form on home soil in Europe's premier club competition, according to Squawka Football:

A few minutes earlier, Lewandowski had confirmed his status as one of the top marksmen in the tournament, as noted by WhoScored.com:

Kingsley Coman scored after the break as Bayern continued to roll.

Bayern's demolition job in Athens kept Arsenal's hopes of qualification alive. But the Gunners also had to do their part.

The north London club did exactly that, courtesy of heavy hitters Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. The latter bagged a brace, as he continues to be his club's main man in the Champions League:

The Gunners now know that a two-goal win in Olympiakos will see them through after a nightmare start to the group.

Arsenal's Premier League rivals Chelsea also kept their qualification bid kicking in Group G. The Blues went ahead in Israel thanks to centre-back Gary Cahill. Brazilians Willian and Oscar added goals late on as last season's Premier League champions finally turned on the style in this campaign.

Willian's goal offered another reminder of his as yet unstoppable quality from free-kicks:

Kurt Zouma pounced in stoppage time to complete a perfect night for Chelsea. Now, under-fire boss Jose Mourinho will seek to cement top spot in Group G.

That aim has been buoyed by Dynamo Kiev escaping Porto with all three points. Andriy Yarmolenko stroked home from the spot to stun the hosts.

Kiev then stretched its lead when crafty attacking midfielder Derlis Gonzalez slipped a shot past veteran goalkeeper Iker Casillas. This result means Chelsea can seal top spot with a win on Matchday 6, something that would be a huge fillip for Mourinho after more than a few poor results domestically.

In Group H, Artem Dzyuba netted twice to put his name among the tournament's marquee players. His goals also helped Zenit St Petersburg see off Valencia in Russia. Already through, Zenit have won the group and need one more win for a 100 percent record at this stage.

While that's a worthy achievement, no team is looking as fluent in possession and as irresistible going forward as last season's winners. Count on Barca to only get better now that Messi is back from injury. It's a worrying thought for the rest of the tournament's contenders.
