Bundesliga Table: 2015-16 Standings and Top Scorers After Week 13 Results

Gianni VerschuerenNov 22, 2015

Bayern Munich's record-setting start to the 2015-16 Bundesliga campaign continued with a 3-1 win over Schalke 04 on Saturday, and following Borussia Dortmund's 3-1 loss against Hamburg, the defending champions lead the standings by eight points after 13 matches.

The Bavarians weren't their usual, dominant self at the Veltins-Arena but took full advantage of a young and inexperienced Schalke team, who forgot to mark Javi Martinez on a cross in the second half. Per ESPN FC's Mark Lovell, no Bundesliga team has ever won 12 of its first 13 domestic matches.

The race for the European spots remains as tight as ever, with a host of teams battling it out behind Bundesliga giants Bayern and Dortmund. Here's a look at the results from Week 13:

Schalke did well to recover from an early David Alaba goal on Saturday, pulling level through Max Meyer and frustrating Bayern Munich throughout their match with solid defence and a number of dangerous counter-attacks.

Teenage sensation Leroy Sane, Meyer and Leon Goretzka showed exactly why Schalke are expected to contend for the title in just a few seasons, with all three youngsters putting tremendous pressure on the Bayern defence, which was without star centre-back Jerome Boateng.

But in typical fashion, Bayern pulled through when needed, with Arjen Robben finding a wide-open Martinez to reclaim the lead and Thomas Muller securing the win in injury time. Manager Pep Guardiola didn't hide the fact his team didn't have it easy at the Veltins-Arena, via Bayern's official Twitter account:

Robert Lewandowski entered the match one goal behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the top scorer's race and struck the post late, one of the few chances the Poland international had to score. He couldn't find any space against Schalke's defence, who sat deep and dominated the aerial battle.

Aubameyang had more individual success in Week 13, scoring in the loss against Hamburg, but Borussia's bid to challenge Bayern for the Bundesliga title already seems over following their defeat.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Lewis Holtby had given the hosts a two-goal lead in the first half, and things got even worse for Die Schwarzgelben when Mats Hummels put the ball in his own net in the second half.

Per Squawka Football, the Germany international isn't enjoying his best campaign:

DW's Jonathan Harding was quite harsh in his assessment of the 26-year-old:

"

I wrote back in April that Dortmund should have listened to offers for Mats Hummels. Now, 13 matchdays into the season, I would be surprised if the same names would even be calling Dortmund.

Successful decision making comes from an ability to transfer knowledge at the right time. Hummels' career has gone on long enough now - he's 26 years old - for experience not to be the issue. He is a World Cup and triple Bundesliga winner, and was a member of Dortmund's sparkling 2013 Champions League campaign that ended in defeat to Bayern Munich. With the issue now being Hummels' decision making, it is fair to consider whether the defender has hit a ceiling.

"

Dortmund's loss allowed Wolfsburg to close the gap to five points, and Die Wolfe had some fun doing it, beating Werder Bremen 6-0. Max Kruse bagged a brace, but Wolfsburg's victory was truly a team effort, with no less than five players scoring.

Bayer Leverkusen and Hertha Berlin maintained their strong form with wins over Eintracht Frankfurt and Hoffenheim, respectively, with the former overtaking Schalke in the process. The gap between third-placed Wolfsburg and seventh-placed Schalke is just four points, so the race for Europe remains as tight as ever.

Hertha's win was as sloppy as they come, courtesy of a Eugen Polanski own goal, but given the conditions at the Olympiastadion, it's no wonder both teams struggled to attack, via Fox Sports News:

Similar to the standings, Bayern and Dortmund continue to dominate the top scorer's rankings, with four of the top five playing for either team. Wolfsburg's Bas Dost added to his season tally against Werder Bremen, but Salomon Kalou and Yunus Malli couldn't match his feat.

At the bottom of the standings, Augsburg crushed Stuttgart 4-0 but still find themselves in the relegation zone. Eintracht Frankfurt sit just four points ahead of Stuttgart, however, so similar to the race for Europe, the battle against relegation remains a tight one.
