Republic of Ireland vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina: Date, Live Stream and TV Info

Rob BlanchetteNov 15, 2015

The Republic of Ireland have one foot in the Euro 2016 finals but must overcome a talented Bosnia and Herzegovina in their play-off second leg in order to progress in Dublin.

The Irish carry an away goal into the tie after a 1-1 draw in the first leg gave them a useful advantage.

Martin O'Neill's team resisted extreme pressure from the Bosnians on Friday night, as thick fog descended to make the game almost unplayable.

Ireland thought they had beaten Bosnia in their first-leg encounter after scoring late in the tie, but they had to settle for a draw as Edin Dzeko grabbed an 85th-minute equaliser.

However, the Irish were delighted with their efforts on Friday, as the hosts dominated the ball and left only scraps for O'Neill's team.

The awful conditions did not help proceedings, as Ireland dug in for a result, but an away goal and a draw were a remarkable achievement considering the visitors were second best for most of the first leg.

The Republic had failed to score in six of their 11 away games in all competitions before Friday's battle, according to OptaJoe, and their shortcomings in attack were evident once again.

Bosnia's possession game saw O'Neill's men sink back into defence, but Robbie Brady's breakaway goal with nine minutes remaining made sure Irish eyes were smiling at the final whistle.

John O'Shea missed the first leg through suspension, but he is likely to be absent on Monday after sustaining a hamstring problem, according to WhoScored.com.

Everton midfielder Muhamed Besic is set to return to the Bosnia squad after serving his suspension, adding quality and defensive cover to the core of the team.

Former Republic striker Niall Quinn said his country need to play a dominant game against Bosnia after surrendering horrendous amounts of territory on Friday, per Sky Sports:

"

Ireland have a natural way of playing. They showed a different way of playing against Germany [in a 1-0 win in October], I don't think it'll be that kind of night, I think it'll be different.

I think they'll be a little bit more confident, I expect [Robbie] Brady and others who have this good feeling to just carry on business as usual, feeling that positivity that is in the camp.

There is nothing to fear, they have to show serious respect and do their jobs and not be sloppy but there is an opportunity to play better football, to take the game to this lot and to own the game. They can do that.

It seemed Ireland could only hope for a goalless draw at best in the first leg, rarely threatening their opponent's penalty box. But the super-charged atmosphere of the Aviva Stadium should see the Irish come out in force, nullifying a Bosnian team that struggles to move though the gears.

The visitors do have plenty of quality, and a deadly striker in Dzeko to land the killer punch, if they penetrate sufficiently.

The former Manchester City player recently moved to Roma, and the 29-year-old has been directly involved in six goals in 11 starts in La Liga and Europe, per WhoScored.com.

O'Neill's men will surely not let this opportunity slip against an opponent that is well within their capabilities of beating.

Bosnia are a dangerous opponent when they are allowed to play, but Ireland know a clean sheet will see them through, making defence a priority.

However, Quinn is correct in observing Ireland must play a style that is more befitting of their usual tactics, and if they produce a performance in line with their 2015 form, they will be celebrating at the final whistle on Monday night.
