Match Preview

Final-day heartbreak for Norway saw the Croatians leapfrog them in the standings, forcing them to settle for a place in the play-offs after defeat to Italy.

The Scandinavians now face a solid Hungary side that have not defeated them in over 30 years, according to UEFA.com.

Norway boss Per-Mathias Hogmo believes his team are ready for the threat of their opponents, and he has chosen a squad of in-form talent, including attacker Marcus Pedersen.

Per FourFourTwo, Hogmo said:

"

Ranking points are not important going into these games—doing your homework is.

We feel we know Hungary well, and know what to expect.

We have made a point of selecting players that are in very good form at the moment. That is why I opted for Pedersen in attack.

"

The hosts have struggled to find the back of the net on numerous occasions in the group stages, but the inclusion of 25-year-old Pedersen should help matters. The Stromsgodset player hit 11 goals in 10 games after his transfer from Brann, and he will provide the firepower against a mean Hungarian defence.

Simon Cambers of ESPN FC believes the visitors will struggle over two legs, but Norway's lack of quality gives Hungary a fighting chance:

"

Ask Hungarian fans what they think of their chances and they will put on a brave face, say they can do it and then express worry about the ageing nature of their better players and a lack of pace. Norway are no world beaters either but when it comes to playoffs, history shows that playing at home is not as big an advantage as you might imagine.

"

Norway left-back Tom Hogli will be missing for the vital game, as noted by WhoScored.comHaitam Aleesami has been drafted in to replace him.

Hungary will also be missing Roland Juhasz at centre-back, stretching their options on Thursday. Goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly is in line to earn his 100th cap for the Hungarians in one of the most important matches of his career, per WhoScored.

The tie will be a tight affair as both European nations attempt to give nothing away to their opponents.

Hungary will be pleased to see a low-scoring game, enabling them to finish the job when the return leg takes place on Sunday night.

Pedersen holds the key for Norway in the first leg, and his goals could cushion their path into the second match in three days' time.
