The rivalry between Argentina and Brazil is the lifeblood of South American football, as the continent's powerhouses compete to take the bragging rights every time they come together.

The two superpowers have not battled for more than a year, as Brazil took the plaudits in their 2-0 friendly win over their old adversaries at the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing, China, last October.

On that occasion, Neymar overcame Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi, but the Argentina captain will not feature on Thursday after sustaining injury for his club, per Ignasi Oliva of Goal.

The Argentina team have been plagued by absenteeism before the clash, as Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero look set to miss out on the fixture.

The Argentinian FA (h/t ESPNFC) confirmed Tevez would miss out after a recent knee injury, while Aguero's torn hamstring sees him ruled out.

Brazilian team coach Dunga (L) remains next to his players during a training session at the Corinthians training centre in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on November 9, 2015. Brazil will face Argentina on November 12 in a FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 qualifier match. A

Brazil also have injury concerns, with both Gabriel and Douglas Santos being drafted in to replace Marcelo and Marquinhos, according to the Mirror's James Whaling, both being present as unused subs in recent contests.

Selecao coach Dunga has returned to manage the country for the second time in his career, departing in 2010 after the team's exit from the World Cup.

The Brazilians have been pragmatic in recent performance, reflecting the usual style of Dunga teams, but let their hair down in their last pre-qualifying game, defeating the United States 4-1.

Argentina have been prolific in 2015, scoring six against Paraguay, and seven against Bolivia, but the true test will come against a well organised Brazil, in the absence of striking royalty.

However, neither team has been consistent in the opening qualifying matches in October: Argentina have only picked up one point from their opening games against Ecuador and Paraguay, while Brazil have a solitary win against Venezuela—after capitulating against Chile in their opener.

La Albiceleste will struggle without their superstar attackers, giving Neymar and his team-mates the edge in this tight affair.

The hosts can call upon the services of Paris Saint-Germain's in-form winger Angel Di Maria, who has thrived since his move to Ligue 1 from Manchester United.

Di Maria has six goals and five assists to his name in the French league and Europe, per WhoScored.com, and he will be the biggest threat to Brazil on Thursday.

The PSG attacker will be key for the hosts as they look to exert pressure on the Brazilian defence, and the visitors will prefer to sit and soak up the pressure, relying on Neymar to implement the magic.

The conservative style of Dunga will provide a classic chess match against the attacking Argentinians, but the visitors will be happy to collect a point after Thursday's battle.
