Tom SunderlandNov 7, 2015

The 2015-16 FA Cup officially got underway on Saturday as 80 clubs from across the land lined up this weekend for the first round of this season's tournament, with upsets to watch out for all over.

League One Wigan Athletic took their leave of the competition on Saturday following a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Bury, with third-tier outfits Blackpool and Barnsley also tumbling out at the first hurdle.

Meanwhile, League Two's Northampton Town claimed a major victory at Coventry City to advance to the second round, where they'll be joined by Leyton Orient and Colchester United following Saturday's wins.

Recap

Colchester's 6-2 comeback victory over Wealdstone made for the most entertaining match of Saturday's schedule, where the U's returned from 2-1 down to win thanks to Macauley Bonne's four-goal haul at Vale Stadium.

Bonne put the visitors ahead in Ruislip, and despite Wealdstone's best attempt to make a swift revival, as noted by Bet365, the League One side eventually prevailed over their sixth-tier opponents:

One of Saturday's biggest upsets saw National League side Altrincham book their place in the second round proper thanks to a 1-0 shock win over Barnsley, where Damian Reeves provided the only goal of the fixture.

Results like these are about as good as underdog upsets get at this stage of the competition, and English champion hurdler Richard Yates was quick to recognise the impact of the "giant killing":

Speaking of closets, National League leaders Forest Green Rovers claimed a major scalp on Saturday thanks to their 2-1 defeat of AFC Wimbledon, where Elliott Frear capped off their result with a 93rd-minute winner.

League Two Barnet showed the division separating them from Blackpool had little effect in terms of intimidation, striking twice in the space of five minutes just before the break to claim a 2-0 win over their League One foes.

And the Tangerines were joined on the exit list by 2012-13 FA Cup champions Wigan Athletic, whose 4-0 defeat to Bury was confirmed by BBC Manchester Sport as their heaviest ever in the first round:

Colchester's six goals made them the most prolific scorers on the day, but Leyton Orient matched them thanks to a 6-1 hammering of non-league Staines Town, while Grimsby hammered St Albans 5-1 at Blundell Park.

Their away victory was a relatively rare one, however, as home sides Sheffield United, Portsmouth, Millwall and Scunthorpe all defended their borders successfully to move on in the competition.

Northwich Victoria, one of the two eighth-tier teams still in the FA Cup running, forced a replay against Boreham Wood after running to a 0-0 stalemate on Saturday, handing them another lifeline to advance.
