Sevilla vs. Manchester City: Score and Reaction from 2015 Champions League

Timothy RappNov 3, 2015

Manchester City clinched a place in the knockout phase of the Champions League on Tuesday with a convincing 3-1 win over Sevilla in Group D action.

Raheem Sterling, Fernandinho and Wilfried Bony scored the goals for City, while Benoit Tremoulinas managed the lone tally for the home side. While City held just 44 percent of possession and earned just two corners to nine for Sevilla, per ESPN FC, the club outshot their Spanish counterparts 22-11 (11-2 on goal) and were scintillating on the counter throughout the match.

The win put City atop the group, with Juventus drawing on Tuesday, and ensured they would advance to the next round. That alone was an impressive achievement, as Mark Ogden of the Telegraph noted:

It was also the first time the club won three straight games in the UCL since December of 2013, per WhoScored.com.

Manchester City came out with a point to prove, and Fernandinho led the charge, as his marauding runs early in the game kept Sevilla under constant pressure. It was a pinpoint through ball from the midfielder to Sterling, however, that set the former Liverpool man free on goal. Sterling took it from there, deftly sliding a shot past Sergio Rico for the game's opening tally.

Fox Soccer on Twitter shared the goal:

Sterling's pace and attacking quality are two of the reasons why Matt Jones of World Soccer Talk thinks City will be more competitive in Europe this year than in seasons past:

Three minutes later Fernandinho doubled City's lead, picking up the rebound off a Wilfried Bony shot and heading home into the empty net.

Sevilla wasn't keen on submitting, however. The Spanish side continued to attack, and Tremoulinas cut the lead in the half in the 25th minute, heading home the team's first goal after some brilliant skill from Koke and a lovely assist.

The fact Manchester City conceded a goal in the Champions League was par for the course, as OptaJoe tweeted:

Despite the threat Sevilla continued to present on the attack, however, it was City who would strike next.

Joe Hart thrust the Citizens forward on the counter-attack in the 36th minute with a quick outlet pass following a Sevilla corner, freeing Jesus Navas down the right flank. The crafty winger created space for himself in the attacking third and played a low cross into the box, where Bony met it a first time and found the corner of the net for the club's third goal.

City would continue to look the stronger team in the second half, creating several goalscoring chances that could have seen them easily double their lead, though neither side were able to find the net after the blistering first half. City didn't rest on their laurels despite holding the lead, however, and were the clearly the brighter side throughout.

That may be a very good sign for the club going forward.

City have had their struggles in the Champions League in recent years, failing to advance past the round of 16 in their last five UCL berths. Advancing to the next round with two games to spare means the team can choose to approach the final games in the group stage with no pressure, choosing either to rest starters or play around with different lineups and combinations for the next round.

Sevilla will need to win their next two matches to advance, meanwhile, and will need some help, as Juventus are a win away from qualifying for the round of 16. Failing to garner any points at home against City severely diminished the club's odds of moving on.

Post-Match Reaction

City was of two minds after their big win on Tuesday.

Yes, they were pleased with their performance.

"It's a difficult group, and for us to advance with two games to spare is an incredible achievement," captain and defender Vincent Kompany said in his post-match interview, per the FS1 broadcast.

He also tweeted, "This win feels awesome. Big three points to bring home. Traveling support was unreal."

But there was also a general mood that much was left to be accomplished, highlighted by manager Manuel Pellegrini's comments after the game, per BT Sport:

Indeed, City still has matches remaining against Juventus on Nov. 25 and Borussia Monchengladbach on Dec. 8, with first place in the group still up for grabs. Sevilla has must-win matches against Gladbach on Nov. 25 and Juventus on Dec. 8, meanwhile.
