Rory MarsdenNov 2, 2015

Sunderland produced a confident performance on Monday as they beat Leicester City 6-1 at the King Power Stadium to extend their lead at the top of the Under-21 Premier League Division 1.

After losing last time out against Manchester United, the Black Cats bounced back impressively to reassert their dominance at the head of the division.

In Division 2, West Ham United edged Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1 in a bottom-of-the-table clash, while Newcastle United claimed a decent 2-0 home win against Aston Villa.

Monday Recap

Leicester actually opened the scoring on Monday evening against Sunderland, with Ben Chilwell firing home a fine finish in the ninth minute after a blistering run down the left flank.

However, the visitors grew into the game and eventually found the equaliser on the half hour through Liam Agnew, who was well set up for the finish after a fine through ball from Rees Greenwood.

Sunderland went ahead three minutes later when Lynden Gooch converted from the penalty spot—Greenwood having been brought down in the box—and he then added his second six minutes from half-time after terrific link-up play with Charias Mavrias.

Greenwood then powered home a fourth just three minutes later. The Foxes had been blitzed in the last 15 minutes of the opening half, and things did not improve for the hosts after the break.

Mavrias netted Sunderland's fifth in the 49th minute, converting at the back post after latching onto Mikael Mandron's pass.

It was then the Frenchman's turn to join the party as Mandron completed the rout on 66 minutes, heading home a rebound after Max Bramley saved his initial effort.

Sunderland saw out the 90 minutes to claim a crushing and confidence-building win following the recent loss to United.

They took their chances with great efficiency, and substitute Dylan McEvoy hailed a terrific performance after the game:

West Ham moved three points clear of Brighton at the bottom of Division 2 as they beat the Seagulls 2-1 at the Amex thanks to first-half goals from Martin Samuelsen and Josh Cullen.

Samuelsen netted his 33rd minute penalty on the rebound before Cullen fired home just before half-time, following up to finish the Norwegian's parried shot.

The Hammers were comfortable in the second half and claimed a victory despite Jeffrey Monakana giving the hosts some hope with an 81st minute goal.

Meanwhile, a late Callum Roberts double was enough for Newcastle to see off Villa 2-0 at St James' Park.
