Manchester United were held 1-1 at home to Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg as the Germans scored a second-half goal to grab a point in Group B.

However, there was a huge shock in Group A as Real Madrid slipped to third in the table after losing 1-0, conceding in the closing moments against Malmo.

Wednesday Recap

Manchester United failed to capitalise after their UEFA Youth League opening day victory against PSV as Wolfsburg earned a draw at the Leigh Sports Village.

It seemed a regulation win was on the cards as United took the lead after 22 minutes through captain Marcus Rashford. The skipper buried a penalty after being fouled by Hassan El-Saleh, which led to the spot kick.

However, the German team played with poise and confidence as they went hunting for a prized goal, and they were finally rewarded for their efforts in the second half as Anton-Leander Donkor equalised, taking a share of the points.

Football blogger Doron Salomon commented on United's average performance at full-time, and speculated why the superior Germans didn't push for the three points:

Real Madrid were stunned on their travels to Sweden as an 88th-minute goal gave Malmo a shock win. Isak Redzic was the hero of the hour as his strike condemned Los Blancos to defeat in the closing stages. The loss sees Madrid slip to third, falling behind Malmo and PSG.

It was a good day at the office for Manchester City, showing strength of character to beat a buoyant Monchengladbach side on German soil.

The hosts grabbed the lead in the first minute as Ba-Muaka Simakala converted to shock the English team. Monchengladbach retained their lead until midway through the second half when 16-year-old William Patching grabbed an equaliser. German hearts were broken eight minutes later, after Aaron Nemane made sure of the points for City with a smart finish.

Football pundit Robbie Savage was impressed by City over the 90 minutes, and highlighted the top players:

PSG remained in control of their tie with Shakhtar for the full 90 minutes, taking the lead early through their impressive striker Jean-Kevin Augustin.

Mamadou Doucoure added a second for the French team on the stroke of half-time, giving PSG the scoreline they needed to express themselves further in the second half.

Roli Pereira De Sa's penalty in the 53rd minute ended the tie as a contest, giving the visitors a commanding 3-0 advantage, but Oleksandr Zubkov's goal 20 minutes later gave Shakhtar hope of a unlikely result.

However, Augustin grabbed his second of the game as the final whistle crept closer, attaining a handsome 4-1 victory for his team.

Galatasaray had too much in the tank for Astana on Wednesday, winning 3-0 in Kazakhstan. An 11th-minute strike by 17-year-old Kerem Caliskan got the Turkish rolling early in the first half, with further second-half efforts by Muhammet Yesilyurt and Dogan Can Davas wrapping up the win.

Atletico were stunned at home against Portuguese giants Benfica, losing 2-1. Joao Carvalho scored midway through the first half to give the visitors control, but the dangerous Juan Moreno equalised in the second half.

However, Diogo Goncalves scored a last-minute winner for Benfica to earn a dramatic win in Spain.

Juve fell to their second straight defeat in the UEFA Youth League after losing 1-0 at home to Sevilla. A 24th-minute goal by Ukrainian Marian Shved was enough for the Spaniards to steal the points.

PSV secured their first point of the campaign against CSKA; the Dutch side earned a draw after a 0-0 result in Russia.

United and Madrid's youth sides will have to buck up their ideas if they have ambition to win this tournament, with the likes of PSG, Manchester City and Arsenal all looking strong and motivated.

Madrid will be shell-shocked by their loss in Malmo, but the group win is still very much in their hands with four games remaining. United were poor on Wednesday, and didn't have the gear shift in the second half that was expected.

However, like Madrid, they still have enough games to turn events around, and proceed with little fuss.
