Champions League Fixtures 2015: Group Schedule, Live Stream and Predictions

Stuart NewmanSep 27, 2015

Gameweek 2 of the Champions League takes centre stage across Europe on Tuesday and Wednesday, as the group stage of the continent’s elite competition gathers momentum.

Plenty of big sides stuttered in Gameweek 1 and will be looking for redemption, including holders Barcelona, who were held to a 1-1 draw away at Roma last time around.

Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City all succumbed to disappointing 2-1 defeats to kick off their respective campaigns. There was better news for Real Madrid and Chelsea, who both ran out comfortable 4-0 victors.

Barcelona Looking to Bounce Back

There’s something missing about Barcelona this term. The football isn’t quite as fluid, the finishing isn’t quite as clinical and, most importantly, the belief isn’t quite as high. Things won't be helped by the absence of star forward Lionel Messi, who could miss up to two months of action with a ligament tear in his knee, per the club's official Twitter account.

Luis Enrique’s side dominated La Liga and the Champions League in 2014/15, yet they need a big lift if they’re to do the same this season.

Still, a 4-1 defeat at Celta Vigo on September 23 may well have given Barca the reality check they needed, and they go into Tuesday’s clash with Bayer Leverkusen looking to continue along the road to redemption.

The Bundesliga side isn't going to go down easily, though, as Leverkusen showed exactly what they’re capable of with a 4-1 victory over BATE Borisov in Gameweek 1.

Javier Hernandez was on the scoresheet in that game and followed it up with another strike against Mainz a week later, showing the Mexican’s finishing instinct didn't desert him upon leaving Manchester United.

The former Real Madrid star spoke of his side’s optimism for the season after the win over Mainz, saying Leverkusen have plenty of belief, per the Bundesliga’s official website: “We believe in our squad, we believe in ourselves, in the way we like to play. We just need to try to prove it because there's no team that's going to be excellent from start to finish."

Javier Mascherano will likely be in charge of keeping Chicharito quiet on Tuesday evening, but it’s the other end of the pitch that will come under the spotlight for the hosts.

Neymar and Luis Suarez have yet to fire on all cylinders this season, with the former under increasing pressure to find the net.

It’s difficult to see anything other than a Barcelona win whenever they take to the Camp Nou pitch, but Leverkusen could prove stubborn opposition and have enough exciting talent to catch their opponents on the counter-attack.

Even so, Enrique’s men need to get their campaign back on track, and Leverkusen may well be in the wrong place at the wrong time as the Catalans' unsuspecting victims.

Prediction: Barcelona 3-0 Bayer Leverkusen

Elsewhere on Tuesday night, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will return to former club Porto, while Arsenal host Olympiakos at the Emirates Stadium.

Bayern Munich will look to continue their strong start to the Champions League season against Dinamo Zagreb, having eased past Olympiakos 3-0 in the opening week.

Wednesday sees eight more mouth-watering fixtures, with Manchester United versus Wolfsburg the pick of the bunch.

United were unlucky to go down 2-1 to PSV Eindhoven last time out, but Wolfsburg’s strong start to the season will give them ample encouragement when they touch down at Old Trafford.

The Champions League isn’t won or lost in the opening two gameweeks, but laying a good foundation for a knockout-stage assault is hugely important.

Several teams need to recover from opening-week disappointments, which could make for an incredibly open, exciting set of fixtures.
