Valencia were far from their best on Friday but did enough to earn a 1-0 win over Granada, their first win since Week 3.
The hosts entered Friday's clash in dire need of a win after the midweek 1-0 loss to Espanyol, and Nuno Espirito Santo made the decision to change his tactics drastically, starting with two strikers and plenty of attack-minded players in midfield.
Bein Sports USA's Andres Cordero noticed the changes:
Granada were active early, trying their luck with a number of shots from distance, while Valencia mainly threatened through their wide players, with Paco Alcacer and Alvaro Negredo seeing little of the ball early.
Belgian youngster Zakaria Bakkali in particular looked lively early on, to the delight of Andrew Gaffney of Yahoo Sports UK:
While chances were few, Mustafi handed Valencia the lead midway through the first half with a powerful header, having stuck around in the box after a corner was dealt with by the defenders. Bakkali stayed in position and fired in a cross, which the German centre-back directed into the goal.
Youssef El-Arabi answered almost immediately for the visitors, powering a shot off the bar, while Negredo struck the side netting with a driving effort.
Alacacer nearly doubled Valencia's lead early in the second half, but his header flew just over the bar. The Spain international thought he had finally scored minutes later, only to see his goal disallowed for offside. As shared by Michael of Penya Chescandinavia, it's not the first time that has happened to him this season:
"Paco Alcácer has a goal annulled for offside for the 3rd time in 2 weeks. #killer
— Michael [Valencia] (@VCF_Nordic) September 25, 2015"
Sofiane Feghouli really should have finished the match for Valencia, but the Algerian failed one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Granada were unable to muster any chances in the second half, however, and Valencia easily held on for the win.
All the major title candidates will be in action on Saturday, as Barcelona host Las Palmas, Real Madrid play Malaga and Atletico Madrid travel to Villarreal.
Las Palmas' visit to the Camp Nou couldn't have come at a better time for the Blaugrana, who need to bounce back from a shocking showing against Celta Vigo in midweek. As shared by Barcastuff, striker Luis Suarez took to Twitter to ensure fans the team is working hard at erasing the memories of the 4-1 loss:
"Tw Suarez: "Just finished training. More united than ever to take on what's ahead. Already preparing Saturday's game. Come on, Barça!"
— barcastuff (@barcastuff) September 24, 2015"
Real are expected to cruise past Malaga, and all eyes will be on neighbours Atletico, who face a difficult trip to Villarreal. The Yellow Submarine are tied for first place in La Liga and have yet to lose in 2015-16, and with Atletico having to focus some of their attention on upcoming clashes with Benfica and Real, a surprise could be in store on Saturday.
