Pep Guardiola Reportedly Eyed as Next England Boss Amid Roy Hodgson Exit Rumours

Rory MarsdenSep 24, 2015

Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola is reportedly being eyed by the FA to take over the England job if Roy Hodgson fails at the 2016 UEFA European Championship.

Per Charlie Wyett of the Sun, English football's governing body is prepared to offer Guardiola a mammoth £10 million-a-year contract to take over the national team.

The former Barca boss' contract with the Bundesliga champions is set to expire in the summer of 2016, so he may be available to hire.

However, Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is confident the 44-year-old will stay at the Allianz Arena beyond the summer, per the Mirror

"

I am definitely optimistic that Pep will stay beyond June 30, 2016. We have a first-class team, a fantastic club, a great stadium and a wonderful city to offer. The coach feels good. He has a good team. It helps to have Munich as a city. There's a lot going for Pep Guardiola deciding for Bayern Munich.

"

Guardiola refused to comment when he was questioned on the matter on Friday, per PA Dugout:

Hodgson took over the Three Lions in May 2012, but his current contract expires after next summer's tournament in France.

FA chief executive Martin Glenn recently said Hodgson would lose his job if England failed to perform at Euro 2016, a situation that could pave the way for Guardiola's instalment, per David Conn of the Guardian.

Since his hiring as England manager, Hodgson has led the nation to a quarter-final spot at Euro 2012 and an embarrassing group-stage exit from the 2014 World Cup.

Elimination in the group stage in France would surely see the former Fulham manager released from the role.

If Hodgson is indeed removed as the manger of England in 2016, Guardiola could be a difficult man to snap up.

He has been consistently linked with the top job at Manchester City, and if he leaves Bayern, he would likely be courted by a whole swathe of top European clubs, per John Richardson of the Express.

However, given his record—he won two Champions Leagues with Barcelona among many other trophies—he would be a phenomenal candidate to take charge of the England team.

He is a serial winner and could turn around the fortunes of a side that has consistently underperformed for the last two decades.
