The new-and-improved UEFA Youth League made a triumphant debut on Tuesday, as the 2015-16 campaign kicked off with a flood of entertaining results.

Manchester United's under-19s took the honour of being the first club to win a fixture in the new 64-team format, beating PSV 3-0 away from home to show extreme promise at the start of their European season.

Real Madrid fared even better as they swept Shakhtar Donetsk away with a 4-0 triumph, and Portuguese contenders Benfica were the most dominant team of the day, demolishing Kazakhstan's Astana 8-0 in Lisbon.

Recap

Ex-Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt began his maiden managerial campaign with a spring in his step after guiding the Red Devils' under-19s to a 3-0 drubbing of PSV in Eindhoven on Tuesday.

The former Old Trafford star wasn't the only iconic figure standing pitchside, however, as MUTV presenter Stewart Gardner noted the presence of Mark van Bommel at PSV's helm:

A first-half free-kick from Callum Gribbin gave the English visitors a deserving lead at the halfway mark, and Marcus Rashford showed some nerve to tuck away two in the second period and seal a perfect beginning for United.

Rashford's second was the only finish made from open play, but Stuart Mathieson of the Manchester Evening News highlighted the visiting outfit's dominance at the set piece as being particularly crucial for their result:

Los Blancos were pleased to see their tournament get off to a shining start thanks to goals from the midfield lineup of Achraf Hakimi, Aleix Febas, Cristian Cedres and Jaume Grau.

All four middlemen got on the scoresheet as Real not only bulldozed their way past the Ukrainians in attack but kept a clean sheet thanks to the goalkeeping talents of Luca Zidane, son of club legend Zinedine, as noted by Real Madrid TV presenter Phil Kitromilides:

Manchester City featured in the evening kickoff and were stunned as Juve's Andrea Favilli opened the scoring after just nine minutes, but Giulio Parodi was sent off just seven minutes later to give the hosts a route back into the match.

England under-19 starlet Roberts teed up Aaron Nemane for the equaliser, and after Francesco Cassata reduced the Bianconeri to nine following a second yellow, the City forward proceeded to beat half the visiting team with a terrific one-man drive, per BPL Zone:

Substitute William Patching was on the pitch for just seven minutes before he bagged a third for the English hosts and Roberts was again on hand to set up a fourth, this time for Lukas Nmecha.

City will be overjoyed to see former Fulham academy prodigy Roberts impressing so early on in sky blue, showing extreme promise and needing little time to settle among his new surroundings, it appears.

Astana were always going to be considered at long odds in their hopes to make it past the group phase, but an 8-0 trouncing at the hands of 2014 UEFA Youth League runners-up Benfica saw their chances to advance become even slimmer.

Diogo Goncalves netted a hat-trick for the Portuguese hosts, who were also pleased to see under-16 starlet Jose Gomes grab a brace, as did striker Hildeberto Pereira.

Like United, Atletico Madrid succeeded in netting three away from home on Tuesday, and their task was even greater after falling a goal behind Galatasaray in Istanbul thanks to a 41st-minute strike from Dogan Can Davas.

It seemed Atleti's demise was sealed after Toni Moya missed from the penalty spot early in the second half and failed to draw the visitors level, but Roberto Nunez scored twice in three minutes to turn the fixture around.

Gala went from being in a commanding position to out of the game in just five minutes when Ruben Fernandez added a third in the 80th minute, letting three points slip that seemed as good as theirs.

Sevilla and CSKA Moscow each came out on the winning side of 4-2 results, with the former beating Borussia Monchengladbach at home and the latter stunning Wolfsburg's under-19s on their trip to Germany.

The Russians' victory was particularly impressive, considering that Wolfsburg's Leandro Putaro scored twice in nine minutes to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at half-time before they conceded four without reply in the second half.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain stuttered to a 0-0 stalemate against Malmo in Tuesday's other early kick-off, a result the Swedes will surely come to savour as they look to make their way out of Group A.
