Recap
Spurs and Sunderland both came into the match looking for their first win, and for 81 minutes, it looked as if fans of both teams would go home disappointed once again. The Black Cats had the better chances, but only slightly, and particularly in the first half, there was little quality in the match.
Kyle Walker appealed for a penalty, and Heung-Min Son should have done better when the side finally found some space, but Sunderland had far more shots on goal and did a wonderful job limiting Harry Kane's touches around the box.
Paddy Power wasn't exactly wowed by what he was seeing:
Jermain Defoe really should have done better when he found some space on the edge of the box but somehow managed to push his shot onto the post, with the entire goal to choose from. He also wanted a penalty after having his shirt pulled by Toby Alderweireld, although replays showed he was holding just as much of the Belgian's shirt.
A scoreless draw seemed like the only logical conclusion to this match, but one moment of brilliance from Erik Lamela set up Mason, who bravely pushed the ball over Costel Pantilimon, knowing full well he was going to get hurt doing so.
As shared by Squawka Football, Mason was more than just an unlikely hero:
Son failed to impress in his Premier League debut, but Spurs put far too much pressure on the 23-year-old star by looking at him constantly for inspiration. A more balanced tactical plan should aid the summer arrival, and a return to form from Kane won't hurt, either.
The former Bayer Leverkusen man took to Twitter to express his delight at making his debut:
"Happy to make my debut and to get the win. Congratulations on your goal @RyanMason. #COYS!
— Heung Min Son (@HeungMinSonn) September 13, 2015"
The win sees Tottenham climb to 12th in the standings, but manager Mauricio Pochettino can't be happy with what he saw on Sunday. Spurs looked slow, sluggish and uninspired, and at this rate, the side can forget about a finish in the European spots.
Perhaps a win over FK Karabakh during Thursday's Europa League fixtures can finally turn things around for Spurs, who need to start putting together some results in order to keep up with the Premier League's elite.
Sunderland still sit in last place, and as expected, the Black Cats will face a real battle to avoid relegation all season long.
Meanwhile, Leicester City continued their incredible run through the early part of the Premier League campaign, coming from behind to beat Aston Villa 3-2.
Grealish opened the score in the first half, his first Premier League goal for Villa, becoming the youngest player to score for Villa since 2010, per OptaJoe. The club gladly shared audio footage of the youngster's first goal via Twitter:
Not to be outdone by his team-mate, Gil also scored his first Premier League goal midway through the second half, putting the visitors on course for their second win of the season.
Ritchie De Laet pulled one back for the Foxes, and Jamie Vardy continued his strong scoring form to pull his team level. With momentum on their side, Leicester City pushed on for a late win, and Dyer delivered, firing the Foxes back into second place in the Premier League standings.
West Ham United will host Newcastle United on Monday in the final match of Week 5 of the Premier League season.
