EPL Table: Saturday's Week 5 Results, Scores and 2015 Premier League Standings

Tom SunderlandSep 12, 2015

The giants of Manchester sit smug atop the Premier League standings after leaders City defeated Crystal Palace on Saturday before United claimed a sweet 3-1 win over rivals Liverpool.

Elsewhere, Chelsea's miserable start to the 2015-16 Premier League term endured at Goodison Park as a Steven Naismith hat-trick downed the defending champions 3-1 in what was a fully deserved win for the Toffees.

That disappointment came not long before the Citizens' gleaming start to the new campaign continued with a 1-0 win at Palace, where Kelechi Iheanacho scored in the 90th minute to bag all three points for the Citizens.

In just his second senior appearance for Manuel Pellegrini's side, the Nigerian teenager came off the bench to salvage all three points for the league leaders just as it looked like the Eagles would snag a result.

Read on for a breakdown of Saturday's Week 5 results, along with the latest Premier League standings and recap of the biggest headlines.

Moneybags Martial Leaves Old Trafford in Awe

Just two minutes prior to Anthony Martial's debut goal for United on Saturday, Christian Benteke slammed home an overhead-kick that may itself rightfully be considered a goal of the season contender.

The Frenchman evidently saw that goal as a challenge and proceeded to thunder past Martin Skrtel and Nathaniel Clyne from the left flank before leaving Simon Mignolet with no chance to save. Match of the Dave attests to Martial's fine form in 2015:

By all accounts, the first half between Manchester United and Liverpool on Saturday was a dull affair, but Martial's 86th-minute strike proved to be the icing on the cake of a thrilling second period.

Daley Blind and Ander Herrera pitched in with the Red Devils' first two goals, and fellow substitute Ashley Young talked up the talents of Martial, per the official Premier League Twitter account:

Of course, there's no telling where Louis van Gaal's £36 million acquisition will go from here, whether this is merely the beginning of something sensational or it proves to be a high point in the forward's United career.

In any case, the 19-year-old and his team-mates alike will bask in the wake of a terrific result for their club after moving to second in the Premier League with savoured derby victory.

John Stones Stands Tall in Battle of the Blues

The bulk of the plaudits at Goodison Park will rightly go to hat-trick hero Naismith, without whom Roberto Martinez's side may not have beaten Chelsea, but the same can be said of cool and collected John Stones.

How fitting it is that after a summer of speculation linking the England international with a move to Stamford Bridge, it was the 21-year-old defender who took firm control of the win over Jose Mourinho's men.

While a limp and uninspired Chelsea attack hardly threatened as they might have last season, Stones formed a steadfast partnership alongside Phil Jagielka that the visitors found nigh impossible to penetrate.

However, while some Toffees may be tempted to revel in their youngster's exploits, the Daily Mail's Joe Strange insists his hype is only set to grow in the coming years:

Nevertheless, Mourinho will mourn the fact his side weren't able to get a deal done for Stones, and Chelsea have now conceded 12 goals this season, more than any other Premier League team.

There was the question after the transfer window shut as to whether Everton had made the right decision to keep hold of Stones rather than cash in. Performances like Saturday's leave no doubt it was the correct choice.

Theo Walcott Grants Gunners Relief

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger opted to start Theo Walcott up front in a 2-0 win over Stoke City on Saturday, but the French helmsman is no closer to finding his optimum lineup, one might argue.

Walcott's pace allowed him to find the opener, but the England international also missed a raft of chances against Stoke No. 1 Jack Butland. Nevertheless, Squawka depicted his sterling scoring rate of late:

Wenger's selection conundrum was further complicated after Olivier Giroud came off the bench late on to head home Arsenal's second with just five minutes remaining.

BBC Sport's Jacqui Oatley quoted Wenger after the match, who insisted Walcott's promotion to first-choice striker was merely due to the opposition and not necessarily a hint at a change in the pecking order:

In any case, it's difficult for the Gunners boss to escape more criticism for failing to strengthen during the summer, even though Saturday's win will be seen as the most comfortable of this term so far.

The victory over Stoke moves Wenger's men up to second in the table behind Manchester City, but the north Londoners may find their resources tested more sternly by a superior outfit.
