Grimes Active for Week 6

Sunday, Oct. 18

The Dolphins announced that Grimes was not among the inactive players against the Tennessee Titans.

Latest on Grimes' Practice Status Ahead of Week 6

Friday, Oct. 16

The Dolphins announced that Grimes was limited in practice all week.

Grimes Is Needed to Help Dolphins Rebound

Grimes is in his ninth season and is a veteran leader in Miami's defensive backfield. He picked off 22 passes in his first eight years in the league, nine of which came in the last two years for Miami after six years with the Atlanta Falcons.

He is a three-time Pro Bowler and was a member of the Associated Press’ second-team All-NFL squad in 2014. He entered Week 4 with 10 tackles and one interception this season.

Bill Barnwell of Grantland pointed out that Grimes was one of the most important players on the Dolphins defense entering the season:

"

By going with a stars-and-scrubs approach on defense, the Dolphins are leaving themselves little margin for error. They basically need [Ndamukong] Suh, [Cameron] Wake, and Grimes to play like three of the best players at their positions while requiring the likes of [Koa] Misi, [Olivier] Vernon, and Reshad Jones to stay healthy and productive. That’s not out of the question, of course, and relying on guys who played well to keep playing well is a lot better than hoping that middling players will turn into worthwhile contributors overnight. This is just a high-risk, high-reward strategy.

"

The Dolphins may need to find a new leader in the secondary now if they hope to replicate last year’s production. Miami finished sixth in the league against the pass in 2014 and remained in the postseason race largely on the back of that defensive effort.

The Dolphins would likely rely on a youngster like Jamar Taylor if Grimes is forced to miss time against the Titans. Taylor was a 2013 draft pick with high upside who needs to live up to that billing with a more significant role.

Look for veteran Brice McCain to also see the field alongside the younger players should Grimes miss time.

Miami currently sits at 1-3 and fired head coach Joe Philbin after the loss to the Jets. However, the Dolphins have the pieces to get back into the race for an AFC playoff spot, though it is still difficult to envision them doing so without their best cornerback on the field for any length of time.
