Donna Vekic, Stan Wawrinka's Girlfriend, Responds to Nick Kyrgios' Punishment

Matt FitzgeraldAug 26, 2015

ATP player Nick Kyrgios made a disparaging remark to Stanislas Wawrinka about the latter's girlfriend during a Rogers Cup match earlier this month and has paid the price for it with a $10,000 fine.

Donna Vekic was the subject of Kyrgios' ill-advised trash-talking, and she expressed displeasure over the fact that Kyrgios isn't facing a certain ban from the court.

"He didn't get suspended," said Vekic, per the New York Post's Marc Berman. "It's ridiculous. No more comment on this."

Kyrgios was assessed and given a further 28-day suspension and a $25,000 fine, but those penalties can be averted if he's on good behavior for the next six months.

Vekic's comments came after an emotionally-charged, three-set win in a first-round U.S. Open qualifying match against Riko Sawayanagi on Tuesday.

There were multiple times in the match where Vekic was debating with the umpire over line calls. She was even moved to tears during a changeover in the first set, though there’s nothing to suggest it was related to the Kyrgios controversy.

"I wasn't feeling so well and wasn't feeling the ball so great," said Vekic, per Berman, referring to the hot court conditions in her match as the reason for her discomfort.

Vekic still has two matches remaining before she can secure a spot in the main draw at Flushing Meadows. The 19-year-old does have plenty of tennis ahead of her if she isn't able to qualify for the season's final Grand Slam event this time around.

The outspoken Kyrgios has supreme talent but is already alienating peers and fans alike with his immaturity. If the Aussie can avoid any regrettable conduct on and off the court in the coming months, it will go a long way to repairing his reputation.
