Capital One Cup 2015: Tuesday Scores, Results for League Cup 2nd Round
It was a successful night in the North East, as Newcastle United beat Northampton Town 4-1 in the Capital One Cup second round Tuesday, while Sunderland won 6-3 against a valiant Exeter City as the goals flew in around the country.
Aston Villa and Crystal Palace needed extra time to overcome Notts County and Luton, while Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion progressed after being taken to penalties.

Newcastle United 4-1 Northampton Town
Newcastle boss Steve McClaren made nine changes from the side that drew with Manchester United on Saturday, but nevertheless fielded a strong team, as new signing Florian Thauvin was handed his first start for the Magpies.
The Frenchman was involved immediately, scoring his first goal in black and white just three minutes in after he turned in Massadio Haidara's cross from the left-wing.
Thauvin turned provider as Newcastle doubled their lead just five minutes later, whipping in a free-kick for Siem de Jong to head home.
Northampton refused to be rattled by the rapid-fire double, though, and pulled one back through Marc Richards, who converted a penalty after Cheick Tiote handled in the area.

Nevertheless, Newcastle continued to create chances and made it 3-1 shortly after the restart, this time with Thauvin feeding Daryl Janmaat.
The game was put to bed shortly after when Mike Williamson headed home yet another expert delivery from the 22-year-old. Ryder noted the Frenchman's outstanding contribution:
The winger has certainly hit the ground running at St James' Park, and if he can replicate his performance Saturday, he can give Arsenal plenty of problems on the flanks.
Sunderland 6-3 Exeter City
The Black Cats raced into an early two-goal lead. Jack Rodwell first pounced on a loose rebound from Danny Graham to drill home before slipping an excellent through ball to Jermain Defoe, who calmly rounded the 'keeper before smashing in.
Exeter refused to lie down, though, and were soon level.
Manny Oyeleke chested the ball past the stationary Sebastian Coates and finished smartly from close range, and David Wheeler grabbed the equaliser as he comfortably out-jumped John O'Shea and Patrick van Aanholt to power a header into Sunderland's net.
The goal-fest was far from over. Defoe grabbed his brace, latching onto Lee Cattermole's through ball and cutting inside before applying the finish. More woeful defending from the Black Cats saw them concede yet again before half-time, this time with Tom McCready lashing in Wheeler's knockdown.
The Times' George Caulkin attempted to describe Sunderland's defensive performance at half-time:
The second half was much more to Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat's liking, as the Black Cats hit three unanswered goals to secure the victory after the fright Exeter gave them in the first period.
Rodwell continued to be influential throughout and had a brace of his own shortly after the restart, crashing in a header from Sebastian Larsson's corner.
Youngster Duncan Watmore showed his promising credentials with Sunderland's fifth, rounding the 'keeper after collecting O'Shea's hopeful punt upfield, while Defoe sealed the win with his hat-trick after Larsson whipped in another expert delivery.
Caulkin succinctly summarised the incredible match:
There were a lot of positives for Sunderland going forward, and Advocaat's side looked dangerous from every attack.
However, their defence continues to be a serious concern, and against sterner opposition, the Black Cats would have been punished even more heavily than they were by Exeter.
More recruitment is certainly needed before the end of the transfer window, or it could be another long season on Wearside.
