EPL Results Week 3: Saturday's 2015 Premier League Scores, Top Scorers and Table

Gianni VerschuerenAug 22, 2015

Manchester United's perfect start to the 2015-16 Premier League season came to an end on Saturday, as the Red Devils failed to score at home against Newcastle United, playing out a 0-0 draw.

The hosts started brightly but their lack of efficiency in front of goal reared its head once again, and with just over a week left in the summer transfer window, one has to think the chase for another striker has to be a priority at this point.

Bafetimbi Gomis and Riyad Mahrez continued their fine scoring form, while Callum Wilson fired himself into the top scorer's conversation by notching a hat trick in Bournemouth's first ever Premier League win, beating West Ham United 4-3.

Recap

Newcastle did well to secure a point at Old Trafford and came close to walking away with a shock win, but Florian Thauvin couldn't turn home a late cross. In truth, the win wouldn't have been deserved for the visitors, who will undoubtedly be happy with the point.

Wayne Rooney's scoreless streak nearly came to an end, as his first goal of the season was ruled out for offside, and Chris Smalling headed United's best chance of the match against the post. Javier Hernandez also came close to scoring, but Tim Krul produced a fine save to deny the substitute.

Bastian Schweinsteiger made his first start for the hosts, replacing Michael Carrick in midfield. The German star had been working toward his best form since completing a move from Bayern Munich, and fans and pundits were understandably excited to see him on the list of starters. Bleacher Report UK weighed in on the matter:

The Germany international had a solid outing, making a number of key interceptions in midfield and showing his uncanny ability to distribute the ball. While he added little in the final third, Schweinsteiger hardly ever misplaced a pass before being substituted an hour into the match.

Newcastle didn't muster a lot of chances but came close to scoring on several occasions. Former Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic hit the cross bar with a header, before Thauvin nearly stole it late, coming within inches of making full contact with the ball.

Still, the best chances fell to the Red Devils, and Paddy Crerand was hugely disappointed with the team's finishing, via United's official Twitter account:

Smalling believes his side is bound to start scoring soon, given how easily they create chances:

Rooney's lack of form has to be a major worry for the Red Devils, however, particularly with the young Adnan Januzaj and Memphis Depay set to play big roles in 2015-16. Both are hugely talented but still learning how to play the game, and they will have the occasional poor outing, like they did on Saturday.

Wilson found the back of the net three times for the Cherries, who scored their first-ever Premier League goals and grabbed their first win at Boleyn Ground. In a wacky match that saw a red card for Carl Jenkinson, two penalties, seven goals and a last-minte goal-line clearance, Bournemouth prevailed 4-3.

As shared by sportingintelligence, the Cherries' rise to the top of British football has been unstoppable:

Crystal Palace managed to beat Aston Villa 2-1 thanks to a late goal from Bakary Sako, and the three remaining matches on Saturday all finished with the same 1-1 scoreline. Both Gomis and Mahrez managed to score in their team's draws against Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively.

On Sunday, title favourites Chelsea and Manchester City will travel to play West Bromwich Albion and Everton, respectively, before Arsenal and Liverpool meet in Week 3's top clash on Monday.
