EPL Table: Standings, Schedule and Full Predictions for Matchday 3

Gianni VerschuerenAug 19, 2015

Matchday 3 of the 2015-16 Premier League season will feature plenty of interesting clashes, headlined by Monday's meeting between Arsenal and Liverpool. In-form Everton host league-leaders Manchester City, while defending champions Chelsea go looking for their first win of the season against West Bromwich Albion.

Liverpool have started the season with back-to-back 1-0 wins and have looked solid, if unspectacular so far, while Arsenal have yet to find their best form. Everton and City both impressed in Week 2, and Sunday's match should be a great test for both teams to find out where they stand in their progression.

Here's a look at the current Premier League standings:

Preview

You can't really argue with Liverpool's results so far, as wins over Stoke City and Bournemouth mean the Reds have the maximum number of points after two weeks and have yet to concede a goal. But even midfielder Adam Lallana knows the squad can do better, and he told the Liverpool Echo (h/t Goal's Peter Hanson) he hopes he and his team-mates can show their full potential on Monday:

"

We know there's room for improvement and we're working hard in training to achieve that. But I also think it's important to see this side of us.

There's no doubt we have a lot of ability in the squad and I think you'll see our performances improve over the coming weeks.

We'll go to Arsenal with a gameplan to keep this run going. We've got a full week to prepare for Arsenal now. Hopefully we can go there and put on a good show.

"

The Gunners suffered a shock defeat at the hands of West Ham United in their Premier League opener, and while they managed to get their first win of the season against Crystal Palace last week, the side once again showed weaknesses after a furious start.

Alexis Sanchez showed rust against the Eagles after returning late to the squad following this year's Copa America, but with another week of training, he should be greatly improved on Monday. Meanwhile, Mesut Ozil looks every bit as sharp as he did toward the end of last year, and theSPORTBible had to make this joke:

As is often the case this early in the season, sharpness in front of goal has been an issue, with the likes of Ozil missing several key chances. Defensively, there is room for improvement, although Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny already looked better against Crystal Palace than they did against the Hammers.

For Liverpool, Christian Benteke has been more than solid in his first appearances, and the midfield unit seems to be in fine form as well. Jordan Henderson and Lallana were standouts against Bournemouth, while Philippe Coutinho showed his class in the win over Stoke.

The back four looks shaky at best, however, led by Dejan Lovren, who doesn't look anymore comfortable in the heart of the defence than he did a year ago. The Reds defenders have yet to face a top-class attack, and if they don't put together a better showing on Monday, Liverpool could be in trouble.

No Premier League team has looked stronger during the opening stages of the season than Manchester City, and per the Daily Mail's Martin Samuel, it's clear who the favourites for the title should be:

With the addition of Raheem Sterling, who added some much-needed pace to the attack, City's attacking output was never going to be an issue.

But the Citizens defence has been superb through two matches, with Vincent Kompany and Eliaquim Mangala doing an excellent job containing Eden Hazard and Diego Costa against Chelsea, and the overall balance makes any meeting with Manuel Pellegrini's men a scary proposition.

Everton's young forwards gave an excellent showing at Southampton last week, with both Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley contributing to the 3-0 win. Consistency has been an issue in the past, particularly for the powerful Belgian, and former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand believes that should be the key issue to work out for Lukaku this season:

The same holds true for the entire Everton squad, and a visit from City will show us exactly what the team's made of. Given the Citizens' superb form, no one will blame the Toffees if they drop points, but Goodison Park is never an easy venue to play at, and don't be shocked if Everton manage to halt City's momentum in Week 3.
