It nearly wasn't so, though, for the Red Devils, as they looked to have squandered all their chances and could not take advantage even when Brugge were reduced to 10 men in the 80th minute as Brandon Mechele was dismissed.
However, Marouane Fellaini rose to head home Memphis' exquisite cross deep into injury time, per beIN Sports:
United's two-goal cushion could prove crucial in the second leg, as Brugge claimed an early away goal in the eight minute at Old Trafford when Michael Carrick diverted Victor Vazquez's low free-kick past Sergio Romero.
Memphis put in a terrific performance as he equalised for 1-1 in the 13th minute and sent United ahead with a stunning 20-yard curler just before half-time, per Dutch Football:

Brugge's combative and attacking tactics made for a terrific match, but they were perhaps slightly too eager to make their mark away from home as they often were left vulnerable at the back.
In arguably the tie of the play-offs, Serie A's Lazio will take a narrow lead into the second leg after Keita scored the only goal of the game against Leverkusen, netting from 12 yards out after a powerful burst into the box.
As noted by Italian football writer Adam Digby, it was not the finest of performances from Lazio, and the tie still hangs very much in the balance given Bayer's home advantage in the second leg:
Sporting were indebted to Islam Slimani for grabbing their second goal in the 82nd minute on Tuesday to hand them a 2-1 lead in the opening leg against CSKA.
Teo had put the Portuguese side ahead in the first quarter of an hour after wonderful work from Andre Carrillo and Bryan Ruiz before Seydou Doumbia equalised—and claimed a crucial away goal—just before half-time after a rapid counter-attack.
Partizan Belgrade saw Marko Jevtovic sent off in first-half stoppage time against BATE Borisov, the Belarusian side eventually making it count as Mikhail Gordeichuk netted the only goal of the game 15 minutes from time.
Meanwhile, the day's early kick-off was decided by Baurzhan Dzholchiyev's 13th-minute header as Astana beat APOEL 1-0 to put them on the verge of becoming the first Kazakh club to progress to the Champions League group stages, per Coral:
The second-leg fixtures will all be played on Aug. 26, and there is little to separate any of the sides thus far.
United claimed the best result from the Tuesday's matches, and they will be champing at the bit to earn a return to the group stages after missing out last season.
