Ohio State Holds Senior Day Before Opener, Ryan Day Explains Changing Season-Ending Tradition

Ohio State flipped the script when it came to Senior Day for the 2026 college football season.

The Buckeyes honored their senior class in Saturday's opener against Ball State, which is the exact opposite for how the tradition is typically handled.

Coach Ryan Day told reporters in August that OSU administrators came to him with the idea. They concluded it was one less thing to worry about while preparing for the final home game against Michigan on Nov. 28.

"When we look at all the things that go on that weekend, the way things have changed, there are some things that we thought about," he said. "The first thing was, we want to keep much of the focus on The Game, and the more distractions we have โ€” there's already enough distractions during that week โ€” so this was just one more thing that we felt like we could move."

Day added the Ohio State seniors were in alignment with the plan.

Former Buckeyes players and others expressed a different feeling toward the change. Traditions that span multiple generations are what helps to set college sports apart, and senior day is one such rite of passage.

Granted, the ongoing evolution of college athletics has removed some of the pageantry from senior day.

It's becoming increasingly rare that players spend four or five years at one school, especially at a program as big as Ohio State. One could argue Day's decision further cheapens the occasion.

Running back Ja'Kobi Jackson and safeties Earl Little Jr. and Terry Moore only transferred to OSU this offseason. They had yet to play a snap for the Buckeyes before the school staged its senior day.

Should the Buckeyes go on to beat Michigan, that may increase the likelihood a Week 1 senior day becomes the norm in Columbus. Day could reverse course if Ohio State, sans what's supposedly a distraction, comes up short against its biggest rival during Thanksgiving weekend.
