Malachi Toney Reacts to Historic Record-Setting Performance in Miami's Win vs. Stanford

Malachi Toney said setting Miami's new single-game receiving yards record was made more meaningful by the caliber of wideouts on the program's leaderboard.

Toney racked up 234 receiving yards in Friday's season-opening win over Stanford to beat the single-game program record set 42 years ago by Eddie Brown.

"It means a lot knowing how many greats played at this university," Toney told reporters after Miami's 45-6 victory. "Just for me to be the player to break that record and set a new one, it just means a lot."

Toney started out Friday's game with a 48-yard reception and went on to make three touchdown catches, including a 47-yard score in the third quarter.

His performance helped quarterback Darian Mensah finish the game having missed just three of 30 pass attempts while throwing for 401 yards.

Multiple legendary Miami wide receivers were watching Toney open the season with a historic performance.

WPLG Local 10's Will Manso shared a video of former Hurricanes and Dallas Cowboys star Michael Irvin congratulating Toney after the win.

Former Miami standout and current Indianapolis Colts wide receivers coach Reggie Wayne also shouted out Toney's performance on social media.

Toney led the nation with 109 catches and paced the ACC with 1,211 receiving yards during his true freshman 2025 season despite reclassifying to enroll in college early.

The wide receiver could establish himself as a Heisman Trophy candidate if he is able to continue building on his chemistry with Mensah in his age-19 season.
