Georgia AG Calls for LSU's Removal from SEC if it Violates Rules amid Lane Kiffin Comments

Georgia is prepared to remove LSU from the SEC if it violates rules regarding former NFL players.

The state's attorney general, Chris Carr, wrote a letter to SEC commissioner Greg Sankey Wednesday encouraging the SEC "to take all measures available to address this conduct, up to and including suspension and/or removing LSU from the Conference," per ESPN's Mark Schlabach and Pete Thamel.

"Conference members have the freedom to associate with institutions committed to following NCAA and Conference rules," Carr wrote. "No institution should be allowed to ignore the obligations of Conference membership while continuing to receive the benefits of membership."

Last week, the SEC announced that it intends to prohibit athletes from returning to member schools from pro teams after former Cleveland Browns tight end Dae'Quan Wright committed to play for LSU. A Texas judge issued an order overruling the SEC's decision.

Kiffin, who is also attempting to roster defensive lineman Zxavian Harrison and edge-rusher Junior Tuihalamaka, told Thamel that he's been in "daily communication" with the conference, adding that the rule "does not prohibit players from practicing at the school, it prohibits them from being added to the final 105 roster, which has to be turned in on Friday."

Kiffin also said this week that his players are in favor of adding former NFL players to the roster.

"Every one of them was emphatic about, 'If they can help us win, bring 'em,'" he told reporters. "We understand we have a team that's practiced together and worked together all offseason, but one of them said, 'Hey, this is how it works at the next level, and this is how the real world works.' So that made me feel a little better in the struggle and being torn back and forth."

On Tuesday, Tennessee chancellor Donde Plowman, who is also the president of the SEC's executive committee, said the league "will not budge" on its ruling on NFL players returning to SEC rosters. She added that the SEC is "prepared to defend our rules" and will back Sankey in doling out penalties to schools that violate the rules.

"We have a responsibility to try and lead the best we can in this time of chaos," Plowman told ESPN. "Our group is united on this. This is not a rule we will budge on... Enough is enough."

LSU has yet to formally sign a former NFL player to its roster, but should the Tigers bring in a former pro player, it appears it could lead to a legal battle. Kiffin must finalize his roster 24 hours before the Tigers' season opener against Clemson on Saturday.
