Stephen Curry could create a "lingering distraction" if he chooses to hold off on signing an extension with the Golden State Warriors despite being unlikely to do so, according to Nick Friedell of The Athletic.

"The overwhelming likelihood has always been that Curry will sign and the Warriors will go about business as usual, with him as the focal point of everything they do," Friedell reported Friday. "But if he waits, whether as a statement about the roster or simply because he wants to see what happens next, the uncertainty would create the type of lingering distraction that will hover over the group until there is resolution."

On Saturday, Curry will become eligible to sign a two-year extension worth $136.7 million with the Warriors (h/t ESPN's Bobby Marks).

The two-time MVP is currently set to receive $62.6 million for the 2026-27 season before hitting free agency next summer.

Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy previously expressed confidence in reaching an extension agreement with Curry.

"I'm pretty confident Steph will finish his career (with the Warriors)," Dunleavy said on Aug. 11, per ESPN's Anthony Slater. "Ultimately it's his call, his decision, whether that's allowing his contract to run out and move on or — look, if he comes to me and wants to be moved, Joe and I will talk it through. We wouldn't love it. But he's earned the right to do what he wants. But as far as the messaging or any idea that he'd be anywhere else, that's not a thing we're looking at or he's looking at."

After wrapping up a 37-45 finish last season, the Warriors brought back several free agents including Draymond Green, Kristaps Porziņģis, Al Horford, De'Anthony Melton and Gary Payton II.

Golden State didn't make many notable external moves, as the team reportedly attempted to land LeBron James in free agency before he ultimately joined the Philadelphia 76ers.

It's also worth noting that Warriors wings Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody are both recovering from season-ending injuries.

If Curry isn't confident that Golden State can climb up the Western Conference standings, the 38-year-old may choose to wait before signing an extension.
