Spanish Super Cup 2015: Barcelona vs. Athletic Bilbao Leg 2 Form Guide and Pick

James DudkoAug 16, 2015

Barcelona face a daunting task Monday: reversing a four-goal deficit to overcome Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup. Last season's treble winners were ripped apart by their Basque opponents at the San Mames Stadium on Friday.

Hat-trick hero Aritz Aduriz will again prove to be a thorn in Barca's side. The 34-year-old helped himself to a hat-trick in the first leg while outshining Barca's star-studded front line of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Pedro.

Barcelona paid the price for being stuck in pre-season mode, per BBC Sport's Andy West:

Barca's Form a Concern

Manager Luis Enrique should be concerned about Barcelona's ragged defence. Not only did Bilbao hit the Catalans for a quartet of goals, but fellow La Liga outfit Sevilla also did the same in the UEFA European Super Cup on Tuesday.

Barca won that match 5-4, but shipping eight goals in two matches hardly makes for an impressive form guide. In fact, defensive lapses have become a feature of Barcelona's preparations for the new season:

Yet if Enrique is worried, he isn't letting his concern show. Instead, the 45-year-old is pinning his hopes on his team's scoring exploits from last season, according to Sky Sports: “If you look at the statistics, last year there were 18 matches where we scored four or more goals."

Barca have won just two games this pre-season and have lacked the fluency that earned the club three trophies last season.

In a surprising twist, Bilbao boss Ernesto Valverde is nowhere near as bullish, despite his side's ample lead. He's expecting a tough outing away from home, per FourFourTwo"It's a shame that the final isn't a single match as we still have plenty of suffering to do."

Bilbao's recent form shows a team comfortable at the San Mames but one likely to struggle away from home. Still, goals have been easy to come by for Athletic, even if May's Copa del Rey defeat to Barca still stings.

Valverde knows what damage Aduriz can cause. But he also knows how important the supply from creative winger Markel Susaeta will be.

Valverde's men are in fine overall form and have all the momentum ahead of their visit to the daunting Camp Nou.

Pick: Barcelona 3-1 Athletic Bilbao

Barca will be rampant at times, with an anxious-for-fitness Messi being predictably destructive. But it's easy to believe Bilbao will fashion more than a few of their own chances and grab a priceless away goal to supplement their unassailable first-leg advantage.
