Sepp Blatter Says He'll Reveal Details of FIFA Departure After Stepping Down

Rob BlanchetteAug 15, 2015

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has promised to spill the beans once he leaves office, admitting an event prompted his shock resignation amid damning corruption scandals at the governing body.

James Whaling of the Mirror reports "something major happened in the few days between his re-election and his resignation," but Blatter has said to De Volkskrant he will not reveal the finer details until he leaves the organisation:

"

I did it to protect the institution and my family against the attacks on FIFA, not to protect myself. I don't need any help when it comes to my personal integrity.

When I am no longer president on FIFA, I will tell exactly what happened. I do not wish to go into details now, because of the ongoing investigations. I keep this to myself and I feel good about it.

Blatter's return to power was blighted by the arrest of 14 FIFA officials after lengthy investigations by Swiss and American authorities.

The awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar have been called into question since the arrests, with further revelations likely after Blatter's latest comments.

The 79-year-old supremo has also claimed he was warned about continuing as president by his UEFA counterpart Michel Platini, per De Volkskrant (h/t SW Lim of Goal).

Blatter insinuated Platini had threatened his brother—two days before his re-election—accusing the Frenchman of suggesting a jail term was possible unless he resigned, per Goal:

Blatter will be remembered as one of the most controversial characters in football history after his departure, and his promise to reveal all in the future will interest fans and administrators alike.

The Swiss still has significant backing across the globe from many football federations, but the sleaze and scandal are now at a level that cannot be contained by FIFA anymore.
