EPL Results: Saturday's Week 2 Scores, Updated 2015 Premier League Table

Christopher SimpsonAug 15, 2015

Everton enjoyed a somewhat surprising 3-0 victory over Southampton in Week 2 of the 2015-16 Premier League season.

Elsewhere, Leicester City recorded an excellent 2-1 away win at West Ham United, and Tottenham Hotspur threw away a two-goal lead against Stoke City at White Hart Lane.

It was a difficult day for the north-east sides, as promoted side Norwich City compounded Sunderland's poor start to the season with a 3-1 win at the Stadium of Light, while Newcastle United suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Swansea City in which they were reduced to 10 men.

Saturday Recap

Southampton 0-3 Everton

A first-half brace from Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley's second goal of the season wrapped up a comfortable win for Everton when they met Southampton at St Mary's.

It was the home side that began the brighter of the two, as Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane came close to opening the scoring.

However, it was Lukaku who found the net when he headed home Arouna Kone's excellent cross as the Toffees caught the Saints on the counter-attack.

The Belgian doubled his tally on the stroke of half-time, exchanging passes with the influential Barkley before finishing coolly from just inside the area.

Squawka highlighted the striker's magnificent 45 minutes:

Southampton again created chances following the restart, Pelle guilty of profligacy in front of goal, first volleying an effort straight at Tim Howard before wasting a free header from a corner.

Barkley capped the win with six minutes of normal time remaining, curling in a lovely strike after picking up a ball from Seamus Coleman 18 yards out.

Former Everton striker Gary Lineker was impressed with his old side:

So, too, was Toffees boss Roberto Martinez.

Per BBC Sport, he said: "As a team we were outstanding in every department. The scoreline was the real truth. We were superior, we defended well, the intensity was incredible. On the counter-attack we looked unplayable at times. Many moments we were superior and that really pleases you."

If Everton can replicate their performance in their next match against Manchester City, they stand an excellent chance of taking at least a point from the game.

Meanwhile, Southampton can kick-start their campaign when they take on Watford.

Swansea City 2-0 Newcastle United

Jefferson Montero again proved instrumental for the Swans as they dismissed Newcastle with ease, while some poor decision-making from Daryl Janmaat earned him two yellow cards in the first half.

Swansea were ahead inside 10 minutes when Bafetimbi Gomis rounded Tim Krul after collecting Jonjo Shelvey's exquisite through ball.

Montero looked bright throughout, and Janmaat was first booked for a late challenge on the winger.

The Magpies grew slowly into the game but failed to trouble Swansea's goal with much of note, save for Gabriel Obertan's low strike that Lukasz Fabianski was more than equal to.

Montero continued to cause havoc for Janmaat, and in a moment of madness, the Dutchman pulled him back by his shirt to earn a deserved red card from the referee.

The Chronicle's Lee Ryder noted Montero's effectiveness in running at Newcastle's vulnerable defence:

Smelling blood in the water, Swansea roared out of the traps after the restart and almost made it 2-0 when Gylfi Sigurdsson powered an effort onto the crossbar from all of 25 yards.

It didn't take long for the Swans to double their lead, however, and just minutes later, Montero's dangerous cross was met by Andre Ayew, who scored his second in two matches.

Garry Monk's side continued to pepper the Magpies' goal for the remainder of the match, but some desperate defending and more than a little luck helped Newcastle keep the damage on their goal difference to a minimum.

The Chronicle's Mark Douglas was highly critical of the north-east outfit and argued that more work in the transfer market must be done to salvage their season:

Per BBC Sport, Newcastle boss Steve McClaren said:

"

We didn't learn a lot apart from it is difficult to win with 10 men. A little bit of naivety has cost us, 10 men and your backs are against the wall. We have to dust ourselves down and concentrate on the Manchester United game next week.

I'm not too sure whether it was a second booking but we knew he would be a danger and unfortunately we fell into the trap.

"

Newcastle will have to improve dramatically to claim a result at Old Trafford in the next game.

While United have hardly been convincing in their two wins, they will be eagerly anticipating the prospect of facing Newcastle's porous back line, which will be without one of their best players in Janmaat.

As for Swansea, they have been magnificent so far this season and will almost certainly make Sunderland's poor start even worse when they travel to the Stadium of Light.
