Ranking Every Premier League 2015-16 Away Kit

Ryan BaileyAug 12, 2015

A Premier League away kit is like a band's difficult third album: often a place for experimentation, frequently a bit of a mess but sometimes a miraculous success.

Having ranked all of the top-flight's home jerseys, we turn our attention to the threads they'll be sporting on away days. Get ready for bright colours, massive sponsors and a selection of garments that may or may not be worth £60...

20. Sunderland

1 of 20

German apparel manufacturer Adidas isn't renowned for playing practical jokes, but there is no other explanation for Sunderland's horrendous green effort this season.

When Dick Advocaat saw this, he might have regretted his decision to stay another season.

19. Swansea City

2 of 20

Swansea City are certainly testing the tensile strength of the old saying "blue and green should never be seen" here. And let's not even get started on that mind-boggling sponsor logo.

With their lovely white-and-copper home shirt on offer, the Swans may need to offer psychiatric evaluation to any fans who come to their club shop and buy this.

18. Southampton

3 of 20

Swansea haven't cornered the market on gaudy blue-and-green fun in this campaign: Southampton will be wearing this shocker on their away days.

Much like Tottenham Hotspur on their home kit, the Saints lose points for the sash design. Let's leave the seat belts on the team coach, lads.

17. Newcastle United

4 of 20

Newcastle United have enraged their fans for the 700,015th time in 2015 by producing a home kit with Wonga blue on it and no stripes on the back. No wonder the Geordie faithful have started selling their own home strip

The Magpies away effort isn't much better. The geometric pattern on the front might interest fans of The Crystal Maze, but that's about it.

16. Aston Villa

5 of 20

Jack Grealish wasn't actually injured for Aston Villa's opening-day trip to Bournemouth. He was just too embarrassed at the prospect of wearing this uninspired bright-yellow away kit.

15. Norwich City

6 of 20

For their latest jaunt in the Premier League, Norwich City have managed to produce three kits that are all virtually the same colour.

Not a lot of other teams will clash with the Canaries, but this definitely defeats the object of the exercise. Shamefully, this pinstriped effort might be the best of the bunch.

14. Crystal Palace

7 of 20

Central bands of stripes are more common on the bonnets of race cars than football shirts, but Crystal Palace will be attempting to get into top gear on the road (sorry) this season.

Unfortunately, the Eagles don't quite pull off the glitz and glamour of international racing in a strip that looks like it costs around £2.50 to make.

13. Leicester City

8 of 20

When Claudio Ranieri takes the Leicester City fiesta on the road, they'll be wearing this little black number.

It's not too bad, but much like a rapper's teeth, it would look better without diamonds on it.

12. Stoke City

9 of 20

Another kit with a seatbelt sash? Much like Stoke City this season, this kit sits in mid-table obscurity.

Xherdan Shaqiri deserves better.

11. Watford

10 of 20

Watford's home kit may be a bit of an eyesore, but their away offering is much better.

It's not quite as nice as last season's alternate offering, but it is quite hard to mess up a black kit.

10. Bournemouth

11 of 20

Bournemouth win brownie points for taking the very rare step of keeping the same shirt from last season. But it won't be identical: The sponsor will be updated to Mansion and the manufacturer Carbrini is changing to its parent company, JD Sports.

They also win respect for sporting a pink third kit that will help raise funds for Breast Cancer Care.

9. Liverpool

12 of 20

Liverpool have had a bit of a shocker in the away shirt department in the past few seasons, so this new offering from New Balance is refreshingly plain, if a little too plain.

Reds fans might want to consider their more striking black third kit.

8. Arsenal

13 of 20

Arsenal's away strip—as seen during their famous pre-season treble campaign—is a bit of a Marmite crowd-splitter because of the diamond pattern. However, it looks utterly fantastic if you are a handsome French striker who can pull off a skintight fit.

7. Manchester United

14 of 20

Manchester United's new threads are reminiscent of the glorious Adidas strips they wore in the 1980s.

The subtle Sharp electronics logo of old, however, is replaced by an oversized, garish Chevrolet one. The Red Devils' latest effort is one of many examples of a good shirt being ruined by a bad sponsor logo.

6. Tottenham Hotspur

15 of 20

A ranking in which Tottenham finish above Arsenal? How unlikely.

Spurs earn their place, however, with a sky-and-navy-blue effort that manages the rare feat of complementing the oversized shirt sponsor.

5. Everton

16 of 20

It's a Europa League qualification finish for Everton, who have tried something a little different in an away kit that features grey hoops on the sleeves and sides.

Considering some of the more audacious away strips on offer, this is a very handsome alternative for Toffees fans who are currently tangled up in blue.

4. West Bromwich Albion

17 of 20

West Bromwich Albion have produced one of the finer home kits in the English top flight this season, and their red away shirt is also a beauty.

The old-school script club crest is an excellent touch, even if it is a little incongruous when placed next to the bombastic Asian betting sponsor.

3. Manchester City

18 of 20

Fun fact: Manchester City are the only remaining Premier League team with a kit manufactured by Nike.

The American outfitter has channelled all its energy into the Citizens' strip, providing a classic home shirt and a very classy navy away kit.

It loses cool points for the "blue moon" design on the sleeves, but it is still rather fantastic.

2. West Ham United

19 of 20

West Ham United's away shirt is a winner. Quite literally. They won at the Emirates Stadium wearing it.

Like their gorgeous home shirt, it's a natty retro number that is commemorating their final season at Upton Park. Even though they won't wear this one at Upton Park.

1. Chelsea

20 of 20

Some folks have taken umbrage at the new sponsor logo on Chelsea's kit, but those folks are wrong. With its simple white body, and tricolore sleeves, the Blues' new away kit is a stone-cold classic.

Much like the team that wears this shirt, you may not like to admit you admire it, but you definitely do.
