New LeBron James Rumors on Why Star Chose 76ers Over Cavs, More After Contract in NBA Free Agency

Even though LeBron James summarized his rationale for picking the Philadelphia 76ers as his next team on Friday, there is also another side to the equation for why the teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat among many others came up short in trying to get him to sign.

Per ESPN's Brian Windhorst, among a wide range of factors that played into James' decision was a Klutch Sports connection with the 76ers that didn't exist with the Cavs or Heat.

Windhorst noted James has a "strong relationship" with Tyrese Maxey since they are both Klutch clients.

The Athletic's Joe Vardon and David Aldridge echoed that sentiment, adding James and Maxey have worked out together in the offseason in the previous two years, and Embiid played with James on Team USA at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

"Maxey and Embiid, league sources said, were dogged in their recruitment of James, calling him multiple times," Vardon and Aldridge wrote.

The Athletic report also noted James didn't care about the "theater" around his choice:

"He wasn't worried about the theater. This was a critical decision for him, the first time he had an opportunity to ask himself these questions — Where do I want to play? Where can I win? — without money being a factor and with nothing left to prove, nothing owed to anyone. There was no plan. There is no press conference planned in Philadelphia. This was just about LeBron deciding where he would feel most comfortable and where he would win."

Cleveland is expected to have James Harden starting at point guard. Even though Windhorst noted Harden's presence did not work against the Cavs, their midseason trade to acquire him from the Los Angeles Clippers in which they gave up Darius Garland, a Klutch Sports athlete, was considered a "strike" against them because James has an established relationship with him.

It was also pointed out by Windhorst that the 76ers trading for Jaylen Brown was "absolutely" what put them on James' radar. The Cavs were speculated as a potential landing spot for Brown when he was being shopped around by the Boston Celtics, but it likely would have required them to give up Evan Mobley in a deal.

Vardon and Aldridge wrote the Golden State Warriors figured out "soon" in the process they were facing an uphill climb to pair James with Stephen Curry, but the "hope" was his "longtime relationship" with Curry and "strong relationship" with Draymond Green would have been enough to close the gap:

"Green even opted out of his contract at the 11th hour to give the Warriors maximum flexibility to sign James and to perhaps trade Butler for Anthony Davis, but 'it happened without any indication that it would happen,' a team source said. The Warriors are now expected to re-sign Green to roughly the same dollar amount — nearly $28 million — of the player's option he declined last month."

It was also believed the Warriors "lack of realistic contention" didn't help matters. As much as the idea of James, Curry, Green and Jimmy Butler playing together sounds fun on paper, all four of them are at least 36 years old and they combined to play a total of 209 games last season.

They would also have to go through a gauntlet in the Western Conference that includes the Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets.

Speaking of the Wolves and their pursuit of James, Vardon and Aldridge noted there was a point when they "truly believed" and they had a "flurry of conversations" with his camp prior to the Fourth of July weekend, but they became more "pessimistic" the longer this dragged out.

As for the Heat, their top two of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo is arguably stronger than the Sixers' two best players.

But the cost of trading for Antetokounmpo thinned out the depth in Miami, as well as losing Norman Powell in free agency, so it's reasonable to believe the Heat will need another year to fill out the roster around Antetokounmpo and Adebayo before they are a strong title contender.

James' statement in picking the 76ers specifically cited a desire to "have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship."

It's reasonable to assume with his 42nd birthday coming on Dec. 30 that James wanted an immediate title opportunity, rather than potentially having to wait until 2027-28 for the Heat to add more depth.

Windhorst also pushed back on the recent rumors that James was attempting to facilitate a team trade for either Anthony Davis or Kyrie Irving before making a decision.

Even though James and Rich Paul did have conversations with teams and players, Windhorst explained they were "seeking information and getting a feel" rather than "making requests" for the roster.

James will be joining the 76ers for his 24th NBA season. He averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds in 60 starts for the Lakers during the 2025-26 campaign.
