Latest LeBron James Rumors on Free Agency Decision amid Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving Buzz

Despite rumblings that LeBron James might be holding off on making a decision to see if a team could add either Anthony Davis or Kyrie Irving, the future Hall of Famer is actually just taking a very patient approach to things.

Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, ESPN's Shams Charania explained that James "isn't waiting for another domino" to fall before he picks a team to play for during the 2026-27 season.

The topic came up in the wake of Yahoo Sports' Kevin O'Connor saying a popular theory within the NBA right now is that James is "slow-playing" things to see if one of the teams pursuing him could swing a deal to reunite him with either Davis or Irving.

Charania previously reported James is primarily focused on the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers, but his camp maintains there is no timeline for a decision.

One suggestion made by Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints is James could be waiting for Aug. 6, which is the date when Davis is eligible to sign an extension with the Washington Wizards.

The idea being if the Wizards don't present Davis with an offer he is looking for, perhaps a trade becomes a possibility. There's nothing to suggest that will happen because Washington reportedly wants to keep the 10-time All-Star.

Rich Paul, the agent for both James and Davis, has given no indication Davis won't play for the Wizards. Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported Wednesday that Washington officials have "rebuffed" any trade inquiries for him and plan to hold contract talks as soon as possible.

As for Irving, there has been no indication the Dallas Mavericks are looking to trade him right now. O'Connor even reported there is a "genuine excitement" within the organization to see what an Irving-Cooper Flagg pairing looks like.

It might make sense for the Mavs to explore trade opportunities during the season if Irving is playing well and they fall out of playoff contention, but the market value for a 34-year-old who missed the entire 2025-26 campaign rehabbing a torn ACL wouldn't seem to be very robust right now.

James' free agency has extended 23 days at this point with no sign its getting closer to the end. The 41-year-old is looking for a new team after averaging 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game in 60 starts with the Los Angeles Lakers last season.
