Lakers' Kevon Looney Explains How Steph Curry Impacts His Fit with Luka Doncic After Warriors Exit
Los Angeles Lakers center Kevon Looney explained how his experience as teammates with Stephen Curry on the Golden State Warriors can help him play alongside Lakers star Luka Dončić.
"Guys like Steph and Luka see a lot of different coverages," Looney told Fadeaway World's Mark Medina. "As a big man in the pick-and-roll, you have to be ready for all of those different reads. Is he getting blitzed? Are they playing into drop? You're going to see all sorts of different coverages throughout the game. You have to be ready to change your screens and change your angles. So with playing with Steph, I've seen a lot. I can bring that to Luka. I know when we played him last year, we always doubled. We did a lot of tricky schemes. Already gaving that experience with playing with Steph, a player of that kind of caliber, just prepares my mind that they're going to try to get the ball out of his hands. So I'll be ready to make plays out of the pocket. Or hold my screens to get Luka open. Or set earlier screens in the back. I'll do all of those things to try to make his job easier."

Looney signed a one-year contract with Los Angeles as a free agent on Tuesday.
While he appeared in 21 games as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans last season, he previously spent 10 years on the Warriors from 2015-25.
Looney won three championships across his tenure in Golden State, spending plenty of time playing with Curry. The big man averaged 5.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game with the team.
In his final season with the Warriors during their 2024-25 campaign, the duo of Looney and Curry owned a plus-2.6 net rating in 613 minutes (via NBA.com).
He'll look to form a similar connection with Dončić, particularly in pick-and-roll situations.
Dončić averaged 10.8 possessions per game as a pick-and-roll ball handler last season, the most among all players (via NBA.com).
With Looney now in the mix, it isn't hard to imagine him setting plenty of screens for his new teammate throughout the 2026-27 season.
