Everything Cristiano Ronaldo Said After Portugal Lost to Spain in His Final FIFA World Cup Match
Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup run with Portugal ended on Monday after a 1-0 loss to Spain, and the first question on fans' minds is whether it will be his last appearance.
After the match, the 41-year-old confirmed that he won't be back for another in 2030.
"Yes, this was my last World Cup," Ronaldo told reporters.
It's an unfortunate ending for a legendary player, but he ultimately is at peace with how his final World Cup went.
"I'm sad to be going out of the World Cup like this," he said. "But I gave it my all; I did my best. That's football. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose."
His exit from the World Cup will also give him time to reflect before deciding what comes next.
"Now I'll have time to think, spend time with my family, avoid acting on impulse... Life continues," Ronaldo said.
Ronaldo has made six World Cup appearances, starting in 2006, and he has scored in each of those, making him the first male player to do so. He is Portugal's all-time leading World Cup goalscorer.
But Ronaldo ultimately never led Portugal to a World Cup Final. His best effort came in 2006 when Portugal finished in fourth place. After that, he and Portugal failed to make it past the quarter-finals.
Despite never winning it all, Ronaldo will go down as the best player in Portugal's history and one of the best players to ever play the game.
