Assessing Lakers, Luka Doncic's Real Timeline to Contend amid Latest NBA Free Agency Rumors

Zach BuckleyJul 4, 2026

The Los Angeles Lakers have reached the loose-ends portion of their 2026 NBA offseason.

This roster is cemented, but the heavy-lifting part of its reshaping is. Austin Reaves is locked into his sidekick role next to Luka Dončić, Walker Kessler is now manning the middle and key support roles now feature the likes of Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Collin Sexton.

Only depth roles remain when it comes to their wish list, which was revealed by NBA insider Marc Stein:

With the major changes completed, the early assessment on the Lakers' offseason sounds promising. Well, according to the one opinion that might matter most to this organization, anyway, Per The Athletic's Dan Woike, Luka Dončić is "excited" about the Lakers' work in free agency.

In terms of fit, Dončić should be excited. He has an established rhythm with Reaves, who can help ease the offensive burden while providing plenty of point production and playmaking of his own. Kessler, meanwhile, is on a short list of the league's best rim protectors, and that coverage will be critical behind such an offense-leaning backcourt.

But how is the timeline looking? Because it sounds like that was a huge hangup for LeBron James and a big reason why he left.

When James assessed this franchise, he "recognized the Lakers were in a different phase with their franchise and chose to prioritize his basketball happiness," per ESPN's Shams Charania.

While James faced immense win-now pressure as a 41-year-old, is the urgency that much less for a Dončić-focused roster? He is obviously younger (27), but he is also in the heart of his prime and has already captained an NBA Finals trip.

This isn't some type of down-the-road plan to return to high-level contention. Kessler offers some growth potential, but the other newcomers are pretty established with their NBA identities. The same holds true for the returning players on this team, especially if Bronny James gets traded away.

Even if the win-now pressure doesn't feel quite as heavy without LeBron around, it should still be plenty strong. Not to mention, the Lakers have very little to gain with time. Their draft assets are already out the door after that Kessler trade. Their prospect collection might feature one notable name (Cameron Carr, this year's No. 24 pick). Expanding that collection won't be easy, either, since L.A.'s elevated floor with Dončić will keep lottery participation outside the realm of possibilities.

It's hard to see how L.A.'s championship chances will dramatically increase a year from now. Or three years down the line.

So, where do the Lakers find themselves after such a dramatic shakeup? The early read shows them behind where they finished this past season: fourth in the West and a conference semifinalist. The pieces fit better around Dončić, but the talent level has dropped, and it's less proven now.

Plus, L.A. probably overachieved last season and wound up higher than it should have. To that end, this team tied for sixth overall in winning percentage but sat just 14th in net efficiency, per NBA.com. Regression was likely coming regardless what happened to the roster.

Yet, the Lakers were in the mix largely because they had elite talent leading the charge, and that hasn't changed. A Dončić-driven team can never be simply ruled out, and this one bears a clearer resemblance to the kind he has won biggest with in the past.

They aren't tier-one contenders, but they're jostling for position among the teams just outside of it. Their roster looks a lot different, but their big-picture reality probably hasn't changed a lot, and neither has the timeline. They should be in the mix for the foreseeable future; they're just unlikely to ever lead this race.
