Analyzing the Newest Lakers Rumors on Jonathan Kuminga, Rui Hachimura in 2026 NBA Free Agency

Erik BeastonJul 3, 2026

The Los Angeles Lakers find themselves in a transitional period this offseason, with LeBron James moving on from the franchise and Luka Doncic moving to the forefront as the undisputed centerpiece of the historic organization.

The team is also undergoing a roster makeover, having already added former Jazz center Walker Kessler following a big trade.

Who might be next for the Lakers?

Find out in this collection of insider rumors.

Looking for a Perimeter Defense Upgrade

Dan Woike of The Athletic reported: "The team, according to league sources who were granted anonymity to freely discuss the Lakers' offseason moves, is still seeking a young wing to help its perimeter defense."

He continued, "A high-upside swing receiving significant consideration, per league sources, is former Golden State Warrior and Atlanta Hawk Jonathan Kuminga, whose $24.3 million team option was recently declined by Atlanta."

Kuminga averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 0.3 blocks for the Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks this season.

He is an excellent defender, with the ability to use his lateral movement to smother opposing offenses. He has great speed and athleticism that allows him to run end to end, chase down opponents, and create key turnovers.

The Lakers need help defensively and Kuminga, the former Warrior, would provide an instant boost in that area. Whether he is a fit for head coach JJ Redick's system and what the Lakers want to accomplish on the court, is the question.

Regardless, he is a player who would greatly improve a team that needs to keep pace with the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference and someone the front office should explore.

Inside LeBron James' Decision to Leave

Dave McMenamin reported for ESPN that "After James informed the Lakers of his decision, a source familiar with the 41-year-old's thinking told ESPN that James felt "it was time to move on."

He added, "James came to the conclusion that he wanted to extend his career playing "meaningful, competitive basketball," according to the source, and welcomed a change."

James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks for a Lakers team that advanced to the second round of the NBA Playoffs before being swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Since informing the team that he intends to move on, the four-time NBA champion has been linked to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and Philadelphia 76ers, per Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of ESPN.

James has won titles with both Cleveland and Miami, while he has expressed a desire to play with Steph Curry with Golden State and Philadelphia has a recruitment tool in the form of Tyrese Maxey, who shares representation at Klutch Sports.

Regardless of where he ends up, it is impossible not to believe the Lakers have taken a considerable step backwards without James in the locker room and on the court.

Latest on Rui Hachimura

Oklahoma City Thunder v Los Angeles Lakers - Game Four

After losing James, the Lakers are trying to bring free agent power forward Rui Hachimura back on a new contract. To do so, it may have to make other moves.

McMenamin reported:

"That Hachimura remains unsigned caused several league sources to wonder whether the Lakers are planning some sort of trade or using the stretch provision on perhaps Jarred Vanderbilt or Deandre Ayton to be able to offer Hachimura more."

The team will have competition in the form of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors, who are expected to be in on the 28-year-old, per Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.

Should Los Angeles lose Hachimura, they would be missing out on a player who can shoot from any position on the court and is adept at creating floor spacing. Considering the scoring threats the team has in Doncic and Austin Reaves, the team will need someone who can create space and opportunities for them to do their thing.

The team suffers a bigger blow than probably expected if he signs elsewhere this offseason, especially if it is in the Western Conference.
